DESCRIPTION:The Forest is Calling is een wereldwijde campagne van het Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) om mensen te bewegen tot recycling of verlenging van de levensduur van hun mobiele apparaten en andere gebruikte elektronische producten. \nDe Recycle Mobiele Telefoons Dag is gestart om mensapen en hun leefgebieden te beschermen. Wat de link is tussen een mensaap en jouw smartphone? Dat zijn de onderdelen in je smartphone\, en andere elektronische producten. Deze producten bevatten de 4 mineralen: goud\, tin\, wolfraam en coltan (of tantaal). Coltan wordt in het Oosten van de Democratische Republiek Congo( EDRC) gedolven. Bossen worden hiervoor\, al dan niet illegaal\, gekapt waardoor het leefgebied van de chimpansee almaar kleiner wordt. Oplossing: de mineralen uit de afgedankte apparaten gaan hergebruiken. De verwachting is dat het aantal mobile telefoons in 2025 ongeveer 18\,22 miljard zijn. Dat is ten op zichten van 2020 een stijging van 4\,2 miljard apparaten. Wij\, de consumenten kunnen een groot verschil maken. Als wij onze telefoons gaan recyclen dan zal de vraag naar de hulpbronnen\, die nodig zijn om dat gigantische aantal telefoons te maken\, verminderen. Want naast de jacht op mensapen wordt de winning van mineralen voor mobiele technologieën gezien als de grootste bedreiging voor chimpansees en gorilla’s in de EDRC. Want ook in de wintermaanden gaat dit diertje op zoek naar eten. Ze doen het wel rustig aan maar houden géén winterslaap. De rode eekhoorn is in Nederland beschermd. Dat betekent dat het verboden is eekhoorns te vangen\, te doden\, in gevangenschap te houden of dit te proberen. Ook mag niet worden gehandeld in eekhoorns of delen van eekhoorns. DESCRIPTION:Naturalis Biodiversity Center\, EIS Kenniscentrum Insecten\, de Wespenstichting\, de Nederlandse Entomologische Vereniging en de jeugdbonden JNM en NJN\, samen met het Cultuurfonds\, het Jacob van Zijverden Fonds en de Uyttenboogaart-Eliasen Stichting\, hebben 2024 uitgeroepen tot het Jaar van de Wesp\, waarin wespen in het zonnetje gezet worden.\n\nHet wordt tijd voor een reëler beeld van ‘de’ wesp. Een beeld dat beter in verhouding staat tot de fascinerende veelzijdigheid van deze belangrijke insecten. In Nederland komen meer dan 5000 verschillende soorten wespen voor\, met een grote diversiteit in uiterlijk en levenswijzen. Van jagende tot bloem bezoekende volwassen wespen. Van insectenetende tot plantenetende larven. Van sociale tot parasitaire soorten. In 2024 zullen allerlei publieks- en onderzoeksactiviteiten worden georganiseerd\, zoals onder andere lezingen en excursies en de wespentelling. Doel is om te laten zien waarom we wespen juist moeten waarderen. Om meer mensen kennis te laten maken met de diversiteit in uiterlijke en leefwijze van deze interessante dieren. En om geïnteresseerden beter in staat te stellen om verschillende soorten te herkennen. From providing milk\, meat and fibre for communities to transport for products and people\, and organic fertilizer\, camelids thrive where other livestock species cannot survive. Camelids play a key role in the culture\, economy\, food security and livelihoods of communities in Andean highlands and in the arid and semi-arid lands in Africa and Asia\, including Indigenous Peoples. Even in extreme climatic conditions they continue to produce fibre and nutritious food. Indeed\, the IYC 2024 presents a unique opportunity to raise awareness of the role of camelids in building resilience to climate change – particularly in mountains and arid and semi-arid lands. DESCRIPTION:Sovon en Vogelbescherming kiezen elk jaar een vogelsoort uit die wel wat extra aandacht kan gebruiken\, in 2024 is het de beurt aan de Huismus. \nDe Huismus is één van de talrijkste broedvogels van Nederland. Toch is deze typische stadsvogel sinds 1980 met zeker 60% afgenomen\, zowel in Nederland als in de landen om ons heen. Vooral in de grote steden zijn veel huismussen verdwenen. De laatste jaren lijkt die achteruitgang gelukkig gestopt. Natuurinclusief bouwen krijgt steeds meer aandacht en het aanbieden van nestgelegenheden in steden lijkt zijn vruchten af te werpen. Maar dat alleen is niet genoeg voor de huismus. De hoeveelheid groen in steden neemt nog steeds af. DESCRIPTION:In 2012 werd op initiatief van toenmalige minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Hillary Clinton 4 december omgedoopt tot Wildlife Conservation Day (Wereld Natuurbehoud Dag)\, een dag waarop in actie wordt gekomen tegen de illegale handel in wilde dieren. \nIn 2014 werd er onder Obama een wet aangenomen dat jachttrofeeën uit Tanzania en Zimbabwe niet geïmporteerd mochten worden naar de VS. Een poging om de (illegale) jacht tegen te gaan. Echter alles wat met Hillary Clinton en Obama te maken heeft torpedeert de huidige president van de Verenigde Staten. Dus het importverbod van jachttrofeeën is richting prullenbak gegaan. In dit specifieke geval speelt ook mee dat zoonlief (Trump junior)\, politieke vriendjes en donateurs van Trump’s campagne fervent jager zijn. En ja je moet je achterban en familie tevreden houden ook al gaat dat ten koste van bedreigde diersoorten. \nDe meest winstgevende vorm van georganiseerde criminaliteit is niet de handel in wapens\, drugs of mensen. Het is de illegale handel in bedreigde diersoorten\, daarom maken criminelen een carrièreswitch of pakken de illegale handel als lucratief bijbaantje. Wist je dat per jaar naar schatting 20 miljard euro omgaat in de illegale handel van bedreigde dier- en plantensoorten en daarvan afgeleide producten zoals ivoor? Extra alarmerend is dat deze illegale handel steeds vaker een grote bedreiging vormt voor de internationale veiligheid\, de politieke stabiliteit\, de economische ontwikkeling\, plaatselijke leefgemeenschappen en de rechtsstaat. Met de opbrengsten van deze illegale praktijken worden onder andere rebellengroepen gefinancierd. De bedreigingen waaraan de cheeta onderhevig is: \n\nin de golfstaten is de cheeta populair als huisdier\nhaar pels is gewild als kledingstuk\nbijgeloof: de botten zouden geneeskrachtig zijn\nboeren jagen op ze om de veestapel te beschermen\nverlies van habitat\nHet snelste landzoogdier loopt een race tegen de klok\, de klok van het uitsterven. Wie wint? De klok of de cheeta?\n\nAls het snelste landzoogdier neemt de cheeta een unieke plaats in binnen hun ecosysteem en heeft ze de reputatie als één van de meest succesvolle jagers in de dierenwereld. Als de cheeta wordt bedreigd na een succesvolle jacht\, heeft ze de neiging om een prooi te verlaten en opnieuw te gaan jagen. Dit maakt de jachtluipaard een leverancier van eenvoudige maaltijden voor andere grotere roofdieren en vleesetende aaseters. DESCRIPTION:The report A data dump of suffering: the EU’s long-distance trade in farm animals exposed\, released by the animal protection NGOs Eurogroup for Animals and Compassion in World Farming\, reveals analyses a cache of previously unpublished EU records relating to the long-distance transportation of 180\,000 consignments of farmed animals within and from the EU during a 19-month period from October 2021 to April 2023. \nIt reveals disturbing details of the extent and nature of suffering endured by around 44 million farmed cattle\, sheep\, pigs and other animals transported annually. The report shows that the EU’s journey records were incomplete\, often inaccurate and vastly underestimate the sheer extent of the length and duration of many journeys. Around 60% of journeys are shown as starting at assembly centres but animals may have been transported from the farm of origin for many hours prior to this without any requirement for this to be logged. Many transporters practise ‘assembly centre hopping’\, avoiding the requirement for animals to be given 24 hours mid-journey rest before resuming their journey. \nThis release comes just days before the publication of the European Commission’s (EC) proposal on animal transport on 7 December. However\, the EC has failed to publish the other proposals it committed to present as part of a more comprehensive revision of the animal welfare legislation\, including the ban on caged animal farming\, which was expected by September 2023. The two NGOs are calling on the EU to ban the export of live animals from the EU to non-EU countries\, to switch to a trade in meat and carcasses only\, and to introduce tougher rules to protect the welfare of animals on journeys within the EU. This call for greater protection for farmed animals’ welfare during transportation is supported by the majority of European citizens. SUMMARY:Ombudsman complaint: the EC has failed to deliver on the animal welfare ECI
DESCRIPTION:For the very first time\, more than 30 animal protection organisations made an official complaint to the European Ombudsman against the European Commission’s failure to uphold its commitment to a European Citizens’ Initiative in which 1.4 million citizens asked for a ban on cages. \nIn its answer to the End the Cage Age European Citizens Initiative (ECI)\, published in June 2021\, the European Commission (EC) promised that by the end of 2023\, it would put forward a legislative proposal to phase out and finally prohibit the use of cages for the listed animal species. Yet\, in the recent work programme for the rest of the political term\, the Kept Animals Regulation\, which should have included the plan\, was missing.. This means that this Regulation will now be left to the fate of the next Commission\, creating heavy uncertainty on when the promised Regulation will be published. In their complaint to the Ombudsman\, the organisations said that the EC has failed to act in accordance with the rules governing the European Citizens’ Initiatives after generating legitimate expectations among European citizens. These shortcomings present a case of maladministration\, both in light of Regulation(EU) 2019/788 and the very raison d’être of European Citizens’ Initiatives as an instrument of transnational democracy. \nPrior to backtracking from its promise\, the EC repeatedly confirmed that it was working towards the 2023 timeline\, with multiple mentions of this date being made publicly by Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides\, in the EC’s answers to parliamentary questions\, at the EU Platform on Animal Welfare\, and in various communications on the Farm to Fork Strategy. Before making the official complaint to the Ombudsman\, the organisations formally asked the Commission to come forward with a definite timeline for the publication of the legislative proposals within the current term\, to fulfil its obligation to the ECI End the Cage Age. Yet\, the EC has failed to provide an exhaustive reply to this request. \nIn addition to the cages ECI\, 1.5 million citizens also asked for a ban on fur farming and the placement of fur products on the European market. DESCRIPTION:The European Commission promised to publish a proposed revision of the EU’s animal welfare legislation this year\, but we’re reaching the end of the year with no sign of this desperately needed update. \nThe lives of billions of animals\, and the wishes of millions of European citizens\, are being ignored. 637 stakeholders are calling on the European Commission President to deliver the committed\, long awaited animal welfare legislative proposals\, to address the inadequate and outdated legislation that fails to protect animals in Europe. The open letter\, addressed to European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen\, is signed by academics\, researchers\, veterinarians\, scientists\, entrepreneurs\, farmers\, and other stakeholders from several countries. The signatories\, which include renowned conservationist Dr Jane Goodall and philosopher Peter Singer\, reiterated that the current animal welfare legislation is heavily outdated and in need of an urgent update in line with scientific evidence and societal expectations. They called for a swift publication of a future-focused\, comprehensive and fit for purpose proposal. \nThe EC committed to publish four proposals to revise the animal welfare legislation as part of its Farm to Fork Strategy. DESCRIPTION:World Gorilla Day creates the opportunity for people all over the world to come together in celebrating the gorilla\, and more importantly\, taking action to protect gorillas in the wild. \n2017 was the inaugural year for World Gorilla Day and it also marked the fiftieth anniversary of Karisoke Research Center\, operated by The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI). Established by Dian Fossey\, Karisoke is the longest running gorilla field study site dedicated to the conservation\, protection\, and study of gorillas and their habitats in Africa. There are many great organizations and individuals dedicated to fighting for their survival\, but greater awareness and investment are essential to gaining ground for gorillas. World Gorilla Day strives to be a rallying point for bolstering appreciation and action for these great apes. \nThe global mobile phone recycling challenge\, “Gorillas on the Line…Answer the Call” came to a close on April 30\, 2019. Twenty-two zoo and aquarium partners collectively hosted the challenge\, recruiting schools and organizations within their local region to join the campaign. In total\, the message reached more than 260\,000 people\, 56 groups across the country participated and collected 12\,486 old mobile phones\, and raised $6\,055 to save gorillas in the wild! The 2019 challenge far surpassed the goals of engaging 10\,000 people in collecting 10\,000 cell phones. \nThis community engagement initiative was created by the Association of Zoos and Aquarium (AZA) Gorilla Species Survival Plan education advisory team to raise awareness about cell phone recycling and its benefits to gorilla conservation. The challenge\, which kicked off in February took place over the span of three months and involved students\, teachers\, parents\, zoo staff\, and many others in collecting old handheld electronics to be recycled in the name of gorilla conservation. DESCRIPTION:De walvishaai is een haai\, met zijn 12 á 14 meter lengte en een gemiddeld gewicht van 14.500 kilo is het wel de grootste vis ter wereld. \nZe voeden zich voornamelijk met plankton en ondanks hun gigantische grootte zijn de tanden van walvishaaien slechts 6 millimeter lang! De walvishaai zwemt het liefste rond in de tropische oceanen in de buurt van de Malediven\, de Filipijnen en Mexico. Walvishaaien zijn normaal gesproken niet gevaarlijk voor mensen. Alleen het zwiepen van zijn staart kan ongelukken veroorzaken. Als je gaat zwemmen met een walvishaai dan doe je dat met een gids die zich aan de regels houdt die opgesteld zijn door het Wereld Natuur Fonds.
