Since day 1\, Dr. Jane Goodall has been an enthusiatic Patron\, each and every year. Swifts Without Frontiers invites all NGO’s\, municipalities\, individuals\, companies\, schools and any collectivity caring for Swifts to celebrate that day by communicating about Swifts (whichever species) and by organizing events. WSD was initially inspired by other World Days like the World Sparrow Day\, then by the World Chimpanzee Day. The date of June 7 was chozen as the best “compromise date” between both hemispheres and all the different Swift species of the world. DESCRIPTION:Fisheries provide a vital source of food\, employment\, recreation\, trade and economic well-being for people throughout the world. \nIn a world of growing population and persistent hunger\, fish has emerged as an important commodity for the achievement of food security. However\, efforts by the international community to ensure the sustainability of fisheries are being seriously compromised by illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing activities. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing activities are responsible for the loss of 11–26 million tonnes of fish each year\, which is estimated to have an economic value of US$10–23 billion. To curtail this impact\, Target 4 of Goal 14 of the Sustainable Development Agenda adopted in 2015 by the UN General Assembly\, specifically urges the international community to “effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing\, illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices” by 2020. \nMeeting this ambitious target requires strong awareness-raising efforts to draw the attention of the general public to the negative impacts of illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing activities\, an activity in which FAO has been actively engaged. To promote long-term conservation and sustainable use of fisheries resources the 1995 FAO Conference adopted the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The Code is voluntary and sets out principles and international standards of behavior for responsible practices with a view to ensuring the effective conservation\, management and development of living aquatic resources\, with due respect for the ecosystem and biodiversity. In 2009 the FAO Conference adopted the Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent\, Deter and Eliminate Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. The Agreement is binding and stipulates minimum port State measures to prevent\, deter and eliminate illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing. In de megastallen van JBS hebben veedieren het ontzettend zwaar. Varkens kunnen niet in de modder wroeten of rustig een nest maken\, maar zitten opgesloten in kooien waarin ze zich niet kunnen draaien. Kippen houden van scharrelen\, maar staan opgepropt in piepkleine hokken\, tussen hun eigen uitwerpselen. Varkens worden onverdoofd gecastreerd\, staartjes van biggetjes worden afgeknipt na de geboorte en er komen regelmatig schandalen naar buiten over extreme dierenmishandeling. Zo schoppen medewerkers varkens en gooien ze met kippen. Rabobank heeft een duurzaamheidsbeleid\, maar uit ons onderzoek (lees hier de samenvatting) blijkt dat de bank zich daar al jaren niet aan houdt. Intussen lijden miljarden dieren in de donkere stallen van JBS. Elke dag. Stuur een kaartje aan Rabobank met de vraag om de financiering van megastallen en grote vleesbedrijven te stoppen. DESCRIPTION:World Bee Day is celebrated on May 20\, on this day Anton Janša\, the pioneer of beekeeping\, was born in 1734. \nThe purpose of the international day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem. The UN Member States approved Slovenia’s proposal to proclaim 20 May as World Bee Day in December 2017. Bees are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants\, known for their role in pollination and\, in the case of the best-known bee species\, the western honey bee\, for producing honey and beeswax. Bees are a monophyletic lineage within the superfamily Apoidea and are presently considered a clade\, called Anthophila. There are over 16\,000 known species of bees in seven recognized biological families. They are found on every continent except Antarctica\, in every habitat on the planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants. Bees and other pollinators\, such as butterflies\, bats and hummingbirds\, are increasingly under threat from human activities. Pollinators allow many plants\, including many food crops\, to reproduce. Not only do pollinators contribute directly to food security\, but they are key to conserving biodiversity – a cornerstone of the Sustainable Development Goals. They also serve as sentinels for emergent environmental risks\, signaling the health of local ecosystems. Invasive insects\, pesticides\, land-use change and monocropping practices may reduce available nutrients and pose threats to bee colonies. As large herbivores\, tapirs are invariably the first species affected by human encroachment into their territory\, and amongst the last to return to regrowth forest. They require substantial tracts of undisturbed land to maintain a genetically-diverse population. Tapirs inhabit jungles\, grasslands\, swamps and cloud forests\, yet each is threatened by human activity – be that mining\, palm oil plantations\, roads or settlements. They form an important part of the ecosystem as seed dispersers\, and form one of the oldest surviving genera in the animal kingdom. Despite their size\, history and ecological importance\, tapirs remain one of the least recognised species of animals. In comparison with other animals\, tapirs feature little in the collective consciousness and are frequently misidentified by zoo visitors. \nEven in their home ranges\, tapirs receive little attention\, with exotic species featuring more prominently in zoos\, children’s books and the media. The plight of tapirs is symbolic for the wider threat to their habitats specifically\, and the world’s ecology in general. The decline of tapir populations is indicative of the general health of their ranges; their disappearance from their home ranges often marks a point of ‘no return’ for the natural environment. The destruction of forests into small\, isolated enclaves and the encroachment of human activity into pristine forests affects all native species. However\, as the largest – yet perhaps the quietest – of animals in their ranges\, tapirs disappear without trace with countless other species. All tapirs are endangered species. Native to Antarctica are six breeding species\, Emperor\, King\, Chinstrap\, Adelie\, Gentoo and Macaroni penguins. Most penguins are monogamous and have distinct calls\, enabling them to locate their mates in large groups. Penguin species lay up to two eggs per mating season with the Emperor and King penguins laying only one egg. DESCRIPTION:Jaarlijks wordt er op Wereldproefdierendag\, 24 april\, stil gestaan bij de vele dieren die in laboratoria zijn overleden. \nEn bij de vele proefdieren die werden gedood nog voordat ze aan proeven werden blootgesteld. Gewoon omdat ze overbodig waren. De dag wordt tevens gehouden als protest tegen het gebruik van proefdieren. De Verenigde Naties hebben 24 april erkend als dag om alle proefdieren te herdenken. Wereldproefdierendag werd in 1979 werd op initiatief van de Engelse organisatie ‘International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals’ (deze organisatie bestaat sinds 1969) voor het eerst georganiseerd. De 24e april is de geboortedag van Lord Dowding (overleden in 1970)\, die in zijn leven fel van leer trok tegen het proefdiergebruik. Zijn vrouw\, Lady Dowding (Muriel Albino Whiting)\, nam later een groot deel van zijn werk over. DESCRIPTION:Consumenten worden zwaar misleid door de teksten op verpakkingen van vrije uitloopeieren. \nVeel van deze verpakkingen suggereren een vrij en blij buitenleven voor leghennen\, terwijl dit met de haast permanente landelijke en regionale ophokplichten van de laatste jaren allang niet meer zo is. Het grotendeels opheffen van de landelijke ophokplicht voor pluimvee op 26 maart 2024 was natuurlijk heel goed nieuws voor heel veel dieren in ons land. Alleen nog niet voor de een derde van alle leghennen in Nederland. Zij vallen nog onder aanhoudende regionale ophokplichten in de pluimvee-dichte gebieden Gelderse Vallei en De Peel. Dat betekent dat op iedere drie leghennen in Nederland er eentje nog steeds niet naar buiten mag. Europa heeft onlangs onder lobbydruk vanuit de agro-industrie en de supermarkten besloten dat eieren van opgehokte kippen alsnog als ‘vrije uitloop eieren’ mag worden verkocht. Pure legalisering van leugens dus. Supermarkten en producenten doen daar nog een schepje bovenop: Albert Heijn schrijft dat deze kippen “vrij kunnen uitlopen in de open lucht en dat bossen en struiken zorgen voor beschutting”. En op de doosjes van Blije Kip eieren\, te koop bij o.a. Jumbo\, Albert Heijn\, Plus en DekaMarkt\, zie je afbeeldingen van vrij dansende kippen in de buitenlucht en staat er dat de kippen “lekker naar buiten kunnen wanneer ze maar willen”.  Dat Europa de valse benaming heeft gelegaliseerd is al fout. Maar dat er helemaal niks op de verpakking staat waarmee de consument eerlijk wordt geïnformeerd dat ze eieren kopen van opgehokte kippen\, dat is helemaal niet begrijpen! Daarom stapt foodwatch naar de Reclame Code Commissie. DESCRIPTION:Every year on March 22\, the Day of the Seal promotes the conservation of seals worldwide; it is also a day to celebrate this marine mammal. \nSeals or Pinnipeds (pronounced /ˈpɪnɪˌpɛdz/) are a widely distributed and diverse clade of carnivorous\, fin-footed\, semiaquatic marine mammals. They comprise the extant families Odobenidae (whose only living member is the walrus)\, Otariidae (the eared seals: sea lions and fur seals)\, and Phocidae (the earless seals\, or true seals). There are 33 extant species of pinnipeds\, and more than 50 extinct species have been described from fossils. While seals were historically thought to have descended from two ancestral lines\, molecular evidence supports them as a monophyletic lineage (descended from one ancestral line). Pinnipeds belong to the order Carnivora and their closest living relatives are bears and the superfamily of musteloids (weasels\, raccoons\, skunks\, and red pandas)\, having diverged about 50 million years ago. \nSeals range in size from the 1 m and 45 kg Baikal seal to the 5 m and 3\,200 kg southern elephant seal male\, which is also the largest member of the order Carnivora. Several species exhibit sexual dimorphism. They have streamlined bodies and four limbs that are modified into flippers. Though not as fast in the water as dolphins\, seals are more flexible and agile. Otariids use their front limbs primarily to propel themselves through the water\, while phocids and walruses use their hind limbs. Otariids and walruses have hind limbs that can be pulled under the body and used as legs on land. By comparison\, terrestrial locomotion by phocids is more cumbersome. Otariids have visible external ears\, while phocids and walruses lack these. Pinnipeds have well-developed senses—their eyesight and hearing are adapted for both air and water\, and they have an advanced tactile system in their whiskers or vibrissae. Some species are well adapted for diving to great depths. They have a layer of fat\, or blubber\, under the skin to keep warm in the cold water\, and\, other than the walrus\, all species are covered in fur. \nAlthough pinnipeds are widespread\, most species prefer the colder waters of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. They spend most of their lives in the water\, but come ashore to mate\, give birth\, molt or escape from predators\, such as sharks and killer whales. They feed largely on fish and marine invertebrates; a few\, such as the leopard seal\, feed on large vertebrates\, such as penguins and other seals. Walruses are specialized for feeding on bottom-dwelling mollusks. Male pinnipeds typically mate with more than one female (polygyny)\, although the degree of polygyny varies with the species. The males of land-breeding species tend to mate with a greater number of females than those of ice breeding species. Male pinniped strategies for reproductive success vary between defending females\, defending territories that attract females and performing ritual displays or lek mating. Pups are typically born in the spring and summer months and females bear almost all the responsibility for raising them. Mothers of some species fast and nurse their young for a relatively short period of time while others take foraging trips at sea between nursing bouts. Walruses are known to nurse their young while at sea. DESCRIPTION:Binnenkort zou de president van Tanzania\, Samia Suluhu Hassan\, de olifanten met de grootste slagtanden in het nationaal park van Amboseli een doodvonnis kunnen opleggen! \nZe staat op het punt een nieuwe vergunning toe te kennen die rijke trofeejagers toestaat om ze voor de lol af te schieten. Deze immense mannetjesolifanten worden ook wel de ‘koningen van de slagtanden’ genoemd omdat hun ivoren slagtanden bijna tot op de grond komen. Ze spelen een cruciale rol als leiders en onderwijzers in hun kuddes. En in deze kuddes hebben ze namen voor elkaar! Het is de eerste niet-menselijke soort waarvan we weten dat ze dit doen zonder imitatie. Experts denken dat hun verlies onherstelbaar zal zijn. Tot voor kort konden de olifanten zich vrij bewegen tussen Kenia (waar trofeejacht verboden is) en Tanzania. Totdat Tanzania vorig jaar toestond dat vijf mannetjesolifanten werden afgeschoten. Deze maand zal de regering beslissen over de jachtvergunningen voor het komende seizoen. De tijd dringt! Laten we ons nu achter de beschermers van deze olifanten scharen. Natuurbeschermers\, wetenschappers en Inheemse volken schreeuwen van de daken om deze prachtige dieren te beschermen. Ze hebben onze beweging gevraagd om zich bij hen aan te sluiten en een wereldwijde oproep te doen aan de president van Tanzania: verkoop deze olifanten niet aan de hoogste bieder. Sluit je nu aan! Via partners ter plaatse zal Avaaz de petitie aan de president van Tanzania overhandigen. Avaaz staat op voor een wereld waarin we in harmonie met de natuur leven en verzetten zich tegen de verschrikkelijke ivoorhandel en hebben bij de VN-bijeenkomst over beschermde diersoorten belangrijke beschermingsmaatregelen voor olifanten gewonnen. DESCRIPTION:De visdeurbel is een project van de gemeente Utrecht en Hoogheemraadschap De Stichtse Rijnlanden (HDSR). \nDie organisaties zorgen voor het beheer en de kwaliteit van het water in de Vecht\, de Kromme rijn en in de Utrechtse grachten. Met de visdeurbel willen we vissen een handje helpen\, én bewoners en bezoekers van Utrecht laten zien wat er allemaal onder water in de grachten gebeurt. Ook leren we hiermee welke vissoorten en hoeveel vissen de Utrechtse binnenstad binnen zwemmen. Die kennis gebruiken we om de kwaliteit van het onderwaterleven in Utrecht te verbeteren. \nVissen zijn een belangrijk onderdeel van het water in Utrecht: van rivieren\, kanalen en grachten. Ze eten waterinsecten en helpen bij een goede waterkwaliteit. Daarom helpt de sluiswachter vissen bij hun jaarlijkse trektocht naar een goede plek om eitjes te leggen en zich voort te planten. Dat gebeurt met de visdeurbel. Hiermee kan jij\, als bewoner of bezoeker van Utrecht\, de vissen een handje helpen. Door op de visdeurbel te drukken\, geef je de sluiswachter een seintje dat er vissen liggen te wachten die door willen zwemmen. Hij kan dan besluiten om de sluis te openen. Normaal gesproken gebeurde dat in het voorjaar niet vaak. Nu kan dat dagelijks. Zo wordt er gezamelijk voor gezorgd dat vissen minder lang hoeven te wachten voor de Weerdsluis. Dat is goed\, want daardoor lopen ze minder risico om te worden opgegeten door andere dieren\, zoals reigers en aalscholvers. \nIn de winter verblijven vissen in diep water. Daar is het veilig voor vissen; ze kunnen niet vast komen te zitten in het ijs en de temperatuur is lekker constant. Maar in het voorjaar willen vissen juist naar ondiep water om hun eitjes te leggen. Want ondiep water warmt sneller op. En er groeien waterplanten waar kleine visjes zich in kunnen verstoppen en waar de jonge visjes veel voedsel kunnen vinden. Daarom zwemmen elk voorjaar overal in Nederland duizenden vissen vanuit diepe rivieren en kanalen naar ondiepe beken en slootjes. Sommige soorten zwemmen korte afstanden. Maar andere soorten zwemmen grote afstanden. Zoals de Winde\, die vanuit Utrecht tot aan Duitsland kan zwemmen. Of de paling\, die vanuit Nederland naar de andere kant van de wereld zwemt om zich voort te planten. Onderweg komen ze veel gevaren en obstakels tegen\, zoals sluizen\, dammen en gemalen. SUMMARY:Dag van de ijsbeer / Polar Bear Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:De dag van de ijsbeer wordt sinds 2011 jaarlijks gehouden op 27 februari om aandacht te vragen voor het leefgebied van de ijsbeer. \nDeze dag wordt georganiseerd door “Polar Bears International” voor de bewustwording van de impact die de wereldwijde opwarming van de Aarde en het zee-ijs heeft op ijsberen. Hieruit volgt dat er aandacht wordt gevraagd om manieren te vinden die de CO2-uitstoot zou kunnen verminderen. Dierentuinen gebruiken deze dag om de bezoeker te informeren over de instandhouding van de ijsbeer-populaties. Men hoopt ook politieke invloed te kunnen uitoefenen. Door klimaatverandering hebben ijsberen het zwaar\, het zee-ijs smelt waardoor hun jacht- en leefgebied langzaam verdwijnt. Maar daar blijft het niet bij. De plekken om jongen te werpen worden dus ook steeds slechter bereikbaar\, ergo minder jonge ijsbeertjes. En als er al jonkies zijn dan zijn overlevingskansen slecht. \nDoordat er minder ijsschotsen zijn worden ijsberen gedwongen om steeds grotere afstanden te zwemmen. Voor volwassen ijsberen geen probleem maar de jonkies houden het vaak niet vol en verdrinken onderweg. De initiator van Dag van de IJsbeer\, Polar Bears International\, vraagt met deze dag om extra aandacht voor de impact van de wereldwijde opwarming van de aarde. Zonder te overdrijven maar zonder zee-ijs zullen er steeds minder ijsberen overblijven\, en dat maakt ze kwetsbaar worden voor uitsterving. De mens is de veroorzaker maar ook de oplosser. \nDoor het verbranden van fossiele brandstoffen brengen koolstofemissies de kwetsbare ecosystemen van de aarde in gevaar\, inclusief die van het Noordpoolgebied. Als we minder fossiele brandstoffen gebruiken als energiebron dan vermindert onze koolstofemissies. Hierdoor kan het broeikaseffect worden vertraagd en zelfs worden gestopt. Het smelten van het zee-ijs behoort dan ook tot het verleden en dat is de redding van de ijsbeer. Ze hebben weer plek om te jongen en kunnen weer efficiënt op zeehonden jagen. Maar het gaat niet alleen om ijsberen. Het VN-rapport over klimaatverandering van 2023 laat verwoestende gevolgen voor mensen zien. DESCRIPTION:Giants of the ocean are celebrated on World Whale Day\, which aims to raise awareness of these magnificent creatures\, their beauty as well as their ecological value to the planet. \nThe annual day on the Third Sunday in February\, World Whale Day\, was founded in Maui\, Hawaii in 1980 to honor humpback whales\, which swim off of the coast of this tropical island. This day was started as an idea by Greg Kauffman\, founder of the Pacific Whale Foundation\, to raise awareness about the threat of extinction faced by humpback whales. These delightful creatures have become the main showcase of the Maui Whale Festival. Every year\, crowds flock to the island to join in the free all-day event\, organized by the Pacific Whale Foundation. The fun starts with a parade including floats\, costumed characters and children’s events\, plus music from Hawaiian and international stars. But Whale Day isn’t just about those humpbacks who are in Hawaii. Whales inhabit all of the earth’s oceans and\, sadly\, the oceans are not as healthy today as they once were. What used to be a lovely place for our whale friends to live has become polluted by toxic materials such as chemicals\, oil spills\, plastic litter and industrial waste that is a threat to the whale populations of today and the future. Paying heed to the biggest animals on the planet is what World Whale Day is all about. \nLinks:\nWorld Whale Day

DESCRIPTION:Tijdens de jaarlijkse Mollentelling roepen de Zoogdiervereniging\, Vroege Vogels\, Waarneming.nl en Tuintelling op om in het telweekend in februari op zoek te gaan naar molshopen en je waarnemingen door te geven. \nMeedoen aan de Mollentelling kan op verschillende manieren. Waarnemingen van mollen of mollensporen\, zoals molshopen\, kun je doorgeven via het speciale mollenmeldpunt of in de tuin via de Tuintelling. Ook via Telmee.nl kun je jouw waarneming doorgeven. Het belangrijkste is om de locatie\, datum en type waarneming (molshoop\, levende of dode mol) door te geven. Sta je bij een veld met veel molshopen? Maak dan een schatting van het aantal molshopen en voer dit getal bij het mollenmeldpunt in bij ‘Aantal individuen’.
