DESCRIPTION:Hello Whovians! Dalek remembrance is on the 21 December every year\, this date was chosen because on the 21 December 1963\, the Daleks (/ˈdɑːlɪks/ (listen) DAH-leks) first made their appearence on screen and into history. \nThe Daleks are a fictional extraterrestrial race of mutants principally portrayed in the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who. The Daleks were conceived by science-fiction writer Terry Nation and first appeared in the 1963 Doctor Who serial The Daleks\, in shells designed by Raymond Cusick. Drawing inspiration from the Nazis\, Nation portrayed the Daleks as violent\, merciless and pitiless cyborg aliens\, who demand total conformity to their will and are bent on the conquest of the universe and the extermination of what they see as inferior races. Collectively they are the greatest enemies of Doctor Who’s protagonist\, the Time Lord known as “the Doctor.” During the second year of the original Doctor Who programme (1963-1989)\, the Daleks developed their own form of time travel. In the beginning of the second Doctor Who TV series that debuted in 2005\, it was established that the Daleks had engaged in a Time War against the Time Lords that affected much of the universe and altered parts of history. \nIn the programme’s narrative\, the planet Skaro suffered a thousand-year war between two societies: the Kaleds and the Thals. During this time-period\, many natives of Skaro became badly mutated by fallout from nuclear weapons and chemical warfare. The Kaled government believed in genetic purity and swore to “exterminate the Thals” for being inferior. Believing his own society was becoming weak and that it was his duty to create a new master race from the ashes of his people\, the Kaled scientist Davros genetically modified several Kaleds into squid-like life-forms he called Daleks\, removing “weaknesses” such as mercy and sympathy while increasing aggression and survival-instinct. He then integrated them with tank-like robotic shells equipped with advanced technology based on the same life-support system he himself used since being burned and blinded by a nuclear attack. His creations became intent on dominating the universe by enslaving or purging all “inferior” non-Dalek life. The Daleks are the show’s most popular and famous villains and their returns to the series over the decades have often gained media attention. Their frequent declaration “Exterminate!” has become common usage. Not since the World Wide Web emerged 30 years ago has a new technology promised to change our world so fundamentally and so swiftly as AI does.  Today’s AI tools such as ChatGPT and AlphaGo are just a hint of what is to come. The future of AI is going to be quite a journey\, and the 2023 CHRISTMAS LECTURES to be broadcast on BBC Four and iPlayer in late December\, will give us a guided tour. \nAI has increasingly grabbed the headlines in recent years – generating excitement and concern in equal measure – but what should we believe? In these lectures Mike will reveal how AI works and how it will affect our lives – and will tackle head-on our hopes and fears for this most fascinating of fields. Throughout the three Lectures\, Mike will explore the big questions facing AI research and unravel the myths about how this ground-breaking technology really works. How can a machine be taught to play a game or translate from one language to another? He will show how computer programmes inspired by the human brain can be taught and even teach themselves. And he will tell the surprising story of how tools like the latest chatbots work and illustrate the mind-boggling scale of modern AI systems – that can be used in everything from gaming to movie-making to designing drugs. \nWhen Alan Turing suggested the ‘Turing test’\, to see if a computer’s responses to questions could be mistaken for a human’s\, it seemed like a far-off\, perhaps even impossible goal. DESCRIPTION:De bron van de Dag van de Rare Loopjes (The International Day of Silly Walks) ligt bij het Engelse Ministry of Silly Walks\, afkomstig uit één van de sketches in Monty Python’s Flying Circus serie 2 aflevering 1 getiteld Face the Press (1970) met John Cleese in de hoofdrol. \nDe sketch draait om een ambtenaar (John Cleese) van een fictief Brits departement dat toezicht houdt op de ontwikkeling en subsidiëring van rare loopjes (silly walks). Cleese loopt op diverse rare manieren gedurende de sketch\, en vooral dit is de bron van de populariteit. De sketch begint in een boekwinkel in Londen\, waar twee klanten staan. John Cleese komt binnen\, gekleed in zwart City-kostuum met bolhoed. Hij koopt The Times\, en maakt bij het weggaan een enigszins militaire draai\, gevolgd door grote\, slungelige passen. De camera volgt hem op straat\, en Cleese draait\, zwaait en loopt gehurkt. Hij gaat een gebouw binnen\, en de camera toont het bordje op het ijzeren hek: “The Ministry of Silly Walks”. In de gang zien we nog drie mensen met een raar loopje passeren. Binnen presenteert ene Mr. Putey (Michael Palin) zijn loopje in ontwikkeling (walk in progress)\, maar het blijkt eigenlijk niet zo erg raar te zijn. De minister vertelt Putey dat hij niet gelooft dat het ministerie hem kan helpen omdat zijn loop niet raar genoeg is\, en het budget is klein (“Maar met subsidie kan ik hem nog veel raarder maken!”\, zegt Putey nog). De regering\, zo legt hij uit\, behoort evenveel uit te geven aan Defensie\, Sociale zekerheid\, Gezondheidszorg\, Huisvesting\, Onderwijs\, en Rare loopjes (Defence\, Social Security\, Health\, Housing\, Education\, and Silly Walks)\, maar heeft onlangs nog minder uitgegeven aan rare loopjes dan aan defensie. Terwijl ze tegelijkertijd sinds 7 oktober meer dan 25.000 doden op hun geweten hebben\, en sinds 1947 nog ontelbaar meer. Zolang we doen alsof dit een doorsnee land is dat gewoon mee mag doen aan ‘niet-politieke’ zangwedstrijden\, kan Israël zich ook zo kan blijven profileren. Dit geeft op zijn beurt weer de indruk aan het publiek van het Eurovisiesongfestival dat Israël ‘een land zoals dat van hen’ is\, en dus deze genocidale daden niet op hun geweten kan hebben. Daarnaast wekt deelname aan het Eurovisiesongfestival\, wat breed gewaardeerd wordt binnen de LHBTQIA+ gemeenschap\, de indruk dat Israël queervriendelijk is. Dit signaleert dat Israël progressieve waarden zou onderschrijven. Maar als queer koppel kun je niet trouwen in Israël\, en de staat roeit nu alle queer personen in Palestina actief uit. Dat zijn geen progressieve waarden\, dat is pinkwashing. We moeten stoppen met Israël legitimiteit verlenen. AvroTros moet hierin hun verantwoordelijkheid nemen door het Eurovisiesongfestival te boycotten\, totdat Israël ervan wordt geweerd. DESCRIPTION:The Sky at Night is a monthly documentary television programme on astronomy produced by the BBC. \nThe show had the same permanent presenter\, Patrick Moore\, from its first broadcast on 24 April 1957 until 7 January 2013. The latter date was a posthumous broadcast\, which followed Moore’s death on 9 December 2012. This made it the longest-running programme with the same presenter in television history. Many early episodes are missing\, either because the tapes were wiped\, thrown out\, or because the episode was broadcast live and never recorded in the first place. \nBeginning with the 3 February 2013 edition\, the show was co-presented by Lucie Green and Chris Lintott. Since December 2013 Maggie Aderin-Pocock has been a presenter. The programme’s opening and closing theme music is “At the Castle Gate”\, from the incidental music to Pelléas et Mélisande\, written in 1905 by Jean Sibelius\, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. \nThis episode:\nIn July 2022\, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) released its first images. They were visually stunning\, and it was clear they provided more detail of stars\, galaxies and planets than ever before. But for the scientists waiting on the data\, this was just the beginning of their journey to discover what the new telescope would reveal. Since then\, they have been working hard and publishing papers on all the data JWST has been sending back. \nTwo years ago\, just after the first images were released\, Chris Lintott set off on a road trip to meet some of the scientists that were excitedly waiting on the first data. He wanted to find out what they hoped it could reveal. To mark the second anniversary Chris\, along with fellow presenters Maggie Aderin-Pocock and George Dransfield\, headed off to meet scientists old and new\, to find out what the Webb Telescope has told us so far. \nChris gives us a run-down of the highs and lows the Webb Telescope has been through and the other discoveries it has made. Maggie is off to Bristol University to revisit Dr Hannah Wakeford who has been using JWST data to reveal what interesting chemicals exoplanet atmospheres contain. \nGeorge meets Professor Leigh Fletcher at the University of Leicester. When Chris met him two years ago\, only one JWST image of Jupiter had been released. Now\, he has data from all four of the outer planets of the solar system\, and they have all thrown up surprises. JWST has revealed new jet streams on Jupiter and provided a greater understanding of its Galilean moons. Seasonal changes on Saturn have now been documented\, and Uranus and Neptune have thrown up quirks that need another few years of work to understand. \nChris also visits the University of Cambridge to meet Dr Sandro Tacchella\, who has been part of a team looking back at some of the earliest galaxies. He explains what new light the JWST data can shed on ancient stars\, and what that can reveal about how our cosmos formed after the Big Bang. \nFinally\, our resident astronomer Pete Lawrence guides us through what there is to see in this month’s night sky\, and how you too can look at some of the same targets as the James Webb Space Telescope – just not quite in the same level of detail! \nLinks:\nThe Sky at Night

De gekozen fragmenten worden getoond en aan de hand daarvan wordt de gast geïnterviewd door een interviewer/presentator. Het programma is gaandeweg uitgegroeid tot een van de bekendste programma’s van de Nederlandse publieke omroep. Sinds 2003 wordt na elke aflevering een film uitgezonden die door de gast van de avond is uitgekozen. \n21 juli – Eric van der Burg (Amsterdam\, 1965)\, VVD Tweede Kamerlid en oud-staatssecretaris van Justitie en Veiligheid Eric van der Burg is de eerste Zomergast. Peter van Ingen interviewt Eric van der Burg over zijn favoriete televisieavond.
