Dit langgerekte stuk natuur is spontaan ontstaan bovenop de door de mens gemaakte gronddepots. Op dit kleine stukje groen ziet Menno de populierwespvlinder\, orchideeën en honderden nesten van de oeverzwaluw. Ondertussen varen gigantische olietankers achter de grazende hooglanders en zoemen de bijen langs. Noem een overheidsdossier en het zit muurvast. Waar de meeste vingers wijzen naar de politiek\, wordt de echte reden niet vaak genoemd: we hebben alles te complex gemaakt. VPRO Tegenlicht werpt een blik op vastgelopen dossiers. Kan het ook simpel? Wat gebeurt er als we er niet met z’n allen in slagen om te ‘ont-compliceren’? The franchise has expanded into various films\, television series\, video games\, novels\, and comic books\, becoming one of the most recognizable and highest-grossing media franchises of all time. The franchise began with Star Trek: The Original Series\, which debuted in the US on September 8\, 1966\, and aired for three seasons on NBC. It was first broadcast on September 6\, 1966\, on Canada’s CTV network. It followed the voyages of the crew of the USS Enterprise\, a space exploration vessel built by the United Federation of Planets in the 23rd century\, on a mission “to explore strange new worlds\, to seek out new life and new civilizations\, to boldly go where no man has gone before”. In creating Star Trek\, Roddenberry was inspired by C. S. DESCRIPTION:The Sky at Night is a monthly documentary television programme on astronomy produced by the BBC. \nThe show had the same permanent presenter\, Patrick Moore\, from its first broadcast on 24 April 1957 until 7 January 2013. The latter date was a posthumous broadcast\, which followed Moore’s death on 9 December 2012. This made it the longest-running programme with the same presenter in television history. Many early episodes are missing\, either because the tapes were wiped\, thrown out\, or because the episode was broadcast live and never recorded in the first place. Beginning with the 3 February 2013 edition\, the show was co-presented by Lucie Green and Chris Lintott. Since December 2013 Maggie Aderin-Pocock has been a presenter. The programme’s opening and closing theme music is “At the Castle Gate”\, from the incidental music to Pelléas et Mélisande\, written in 1905 by Jean Sibelius\, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. \nThis episode:\nThe Very Large Telescope – or VLT – has been responsible for some of the greatest astronomical breakthroughs of all time\, discoveries that have resulted in Nobel Prizes and transformed our understanding of the cosmos. The Sky at Night team travels to the heart of Chile’s Atacama Desert to explore one of the most advanced observatories in the world – a site at the forefront of ground-based optical astronomy. \nThe Very Large Telescope\, or VLT\, is located at the Paranal Observatory\, in the Atacama Desert\, one of the driest places on earth apart from the North and South Poles\, which makes it the perfect place for an observatory because there is little moisture in the air distorting the view of the stars. \nThe VLT is actually made up of four main telescopes that can be used individually or have their observing power combined. Each telescope contains a huge 8.2 metre mirror at its heart\, designed to capture as much light as possible\, and the images obtained from the ground are almost as sharp as those obtained in space. \nIn this episode\, Maggie meets some of the scientists\, engineers and astronomers working at this extraordinary site. Her journey begins by meeting the head of maintenance\, support and engineering\, Maxime Boccas. He is leading the operation of something that only happens once every two years – the cleaning of the mirrors. Maxime explains the incredible way these huge and delicate mirrors are cleaned and maintained – including the way aluminium particles are vaporised to create perfectly reflective surfaces. \nSomeone using the incredible telescopes for their work is astronomer Dr Joe Anderson. Along with other scientists\, Joe uses the VLT’s specialised instruments – devices that analyse light from the universe\, helping scientists to see and better understand the cosmos. Joe explains that the VLT is the world’s most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory\, and its huge mirrors and range of instruments mean astronomers can get readings across a broad range of spectrums\, which has led to a lot of new discoveries regarding exoplanets\, black holes and gamma ray bursts. \nThe VLT is a huge site in the middle of a desert\, so Maggie next meets Vanessa Peidro\, the head of logistics and responsible for maintaining not just the buildings and vehicles but also managing food\, water and other facilities that cater for 150-160 people on site at any one time. \nMaggie then meets physicist Francoise Delplancke-Stroebele and her colleague Frederic Gonte. They are leading the VLT’s next upgrade\, Gravity+\, and explain how the four massive telescopes at the VLT work in unison by combining light waves in a technique called interferometry. This technique is used by astronomer Dr Abigail Frost\, who explains how interferometry helped in the recent discovery of a rare so-called ‘vampire star’. \nThe VLT is still a world-class observatory with cutting-edge research\, but the site will soon transform into an even more powerful observatory. The Extremely Large Telescope\, or ELT\, is currently in construction. Maggie gets a sneak peek at what will be\, when it’s completed in five years’ time\, the biggest optical telescope in the world. Werknemers die in Nederland twee jaar ziek zijn\, komen in aanmerking voor een arbeidsongeschiktheidsuitkering\, de WIA-uitkering. ‘Onze helden’ vertellen in Zembla hoe bikkelhard de WIA voor hen is. Een arts\, die meer verdient\, heeft een grotere kans om volledig afgekeurd te worden en daarvoor te worden gecompenseerd. Een verpleegkundige die minder verdient heeft een grotere kans om op bijstandsniveau terecht te komen. Al jaren uiten de Verenigde Naties forse kritiek; de WIA is in strijd met het internationale arbeidsverdrag. Wat is er met deze kritiek gedaan? The interaction between emerging and traditional forms of broadcast creates a great opportunity to raise awareness about the important issues facing our communities and our planet.\nIn recognition of the increasing impact television has on decision-making by bringing world attention to conflicts and threats to peace and security and its potential role in sharpening the focus on other major issues\, including economic and social issues\, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 November as World Television Day (through resolution 51/205 of 17 December 1996). \nWorld Television Day is not so much a celebration of the tool\, but rather the philosophy which it represents. Television represents a symbol for communication and globalization in the contemporary world. On 21 and 22 November 1996 the United Nations held the first World Television Forum\, where leading media figures met under the auspices of the United Nations to discuss the growing significance of television in today’s changing world and to consider how they might enhance their mutual cooperation. That is why the General Assembly decided to proclaim 21 November as World Television Day. This was done in recognition of the increasing impact television has on the process of decision-making. Television was thus acknowledged as a major tool in informing\, channelling and affecting public opinion. De BBC zendt deze serie sinds 1963 uit\, met een onderbreking van 1989 tot 2005. In 1996 werd geprobeerd Doctor Who nieuw leven in te blazen met een televisiefilm die als een soort pilot moest dienen voor een nieuwe serie. Hoewel deze film een kijkcijfersucces was in het Verenigd Koninkrijk\, werd het niets in de Verenigde Staten\, waar men deze nieuwe serie wilde produceren\, en het project werd dan ook niet voortgezet. De serie werd in 2005 alsnog hervat met BBC Wales als producent. Het is een cultureel fenomeen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk\, onder meer dankzij de jaarlijkse kerstspecial. De Doctor beweegt zich voort in tijd en ruimte in de TARDIS (een acroniem voor Time And Relative Dimension In Space\, een relatieve dimensie en tijd in de ruimte). Dit ‘voertuig’ – dat van binnen groter is dan van buiten – had oorspronkelijk de eigenschap zich aan te passen aan de omgeving waarin het zich bevond. Echter\, nog voor de aanvang van de serie\, in 1963\, is het bij een bezoek aan Londen ‘blijven steken’ in de vorm van een politiehokje. Zo’n blauwe telefooncel waarin men de politie kon bellen was tot de jaren 1970 veel te zien in de straten van het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Brian Hodgson maakte het geluid van de TARDIS door met zijn moeders huissleutel over een pianosnaar te schrapen. Dalek remembrance is on the 21 December every year\, this date was chosen because on the 21 December 1963\, the Daleks (/ˈdɑːlɪks/ (listen) DAH-leks) first made their appearence on screen and into history. \nThe Daleks are a fictional extraterrestrial race of mutants principally portrayed in the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who. The Daleks were conceived by science-fiction writer Terry Nation and first appeared in the 1963 Doctor Who serial The Daleks\, in shells designed by Raymond Cusick. Drawing inspiration from the Nazis\, Nation portrayed the Daleks as violent\, merciless and pitiless cyborg aliens\, who demand total conformity to their will and are bent on the conquest of the universe and the extermination of what they see as inferior races. Collectively they are the greatest enemies of Doctor Who’s protagonist\, the Time Lord known as “the Doctor.” During the second year of the original Doctor Who programme (1963-1989)\, the Daleks developed their own form of time travel. In the beginning of the second Doctor Who TV series that debuted in 2005\, it was established that the Daleks had engaged in a Time War against the Time Lords that affected much of the universe and altered parts of history. \nIn the programme’s narrative\, the planet Skaro suffered a thousand-year war between two societies: the Kaleds and the Thals. During this time-period\, many natives of Skaro became badly mutated by fallout from nuclear weapons and chemical warfare. The Kaled government believed in genetic purity and swore to “exterminate the Thals” for being inferior. Believing his own society was becoming weak and that it was his duty to create a new master race from the ashes of his people\, the Kaled scientist Davros genetically modified several Kaleds into squid-like life-forms he called Daleks\, removing “weaknesses” such as mercy and sympathy while increasing aggression and survival-instinct. He then integrated them with tank-like robotic shells equipped with advanced technology based on the same life-support system he himself used since being burned and blinded by a nuclear attack. His creations became intent on dominating the universe by enslaving or purging all “inferior” non-Dalek life. The Daleks are the show’s most popular and famous villains and their returns to the series over the decades have often gained media attention. Their frequent declaration “Exterminate!” has become common usage. Not since the World Wide Web emerged 30 years ago has a new technology promised to change our world so fundamentally and so swiftly as AI does.  Today’s AI tools such as ChatGPT and AlphaGo are just a hint of what is to come. The future of AI is going to be quite a journey\, and the 2023 CHRISTMAS LECTURES to be broadcast on BBC Four and iPlayer in late December\, will give us a guided tour. \nAI has increasingly grabbed the headlines in recent years – generating excitement and concern in equal measure – but what should we believe? In these lectures Mike will reveal how AI works and how it will affect our lives – and will tackle head-on our hopes and fears for this most fascinating of fields. Throughout the three Lectures\, Mike will explore the big questions facing AI research and unravel the myths about how this ground-breaking technology really works. How can a machine be taught to play a game or translate from one language to another? He will show how computer programmes inspired by the human brain can be taught and even teach themselves. And he will tell the surprising story of how tools like the latest chatbots work and illustrate the mind-boggling scale of modern AI systems – that can be used in everything from gaming to movie-making to designing drugs. \nWhen Alan Turing suggested the ‘Turing test’\, to see if a computer’s responses to questions could be mistaken for a human’s\, it seemed like a far-off\, perhaps even impossible goal. We will play a high stakes ‘Turing test’ in the Ri Theatre\, along with other exciting experiments from the AI frontier\, to find out just how far we are from Turing’s dream. Although we think of AI as something in the future\, Mike will show us the role that AI already plays in our lives – without us even being aware of it. He will demonstrate the huge impact AI is having in fields ranging from medicine to football to astrophysics – and even our creative lives – in art\, photography\, and music. \nYet while AI will create many exciting opportunities\, advances in the field have raised many fears – some justified\, others not. There are concerns about identifying what’s fake and what’s real\, as AI becomes increasingly clever. Mike will talk us through the dangers that AI raises\, from machines adopting human prejudices\, through to machines that operate as our boss at work\, up to questions about whether AI might be a risk to humanity. And finally\, he’ll address the really big question of AI: can it ever truly be like us\, or are humans unique? Across the series Michael will be joined by some major figures from the AI world\, including scientists from the world’s leading AI companies. He will also introduce a range of robot friends\, who will demonstrate what robots today can do – and what they can’t.
