DESCRIPTION:The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (WDAH) – 27 October – is key initiative for both UNESCO and the Coordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Associations (CCAAA) to honor audiovisual preservation professionals and institutions that safeguard our heritage for future generations. \nAudiovisual archives tell us stories about people’s lives and cultures from all over the world. They represent a priceless heritage which is an affirmation of our collective memory and a valuable source of knowledge since they reflect the cultural\, social and linguistic diversity of our communities. They help us grow and comprehend the world we all share. Conserving this heritage and ensuring it remains accessible to the public and future generations is a vital goal for all memory institutions\, as well as the public at large. The WDAH provides an occasion to raise general awareness of the need to take urgent measures and to acknowledge the importance of audiovisual documents. It serves as an opportunity for Member States to evaluate their performance with respect to implementing the 2015 Recommendation Concerning the Preservation of\, and Access to\, Documentary Heritage\, Including in Digital Form\, and it promotes the free flow of ideas by word and image as a representation of our shared heritage and memory. DESCRIPTION:De Zuidlaardermarkt is vanouds een paardenmarkt maar tegenwoordig vooral een dieren- en warenmarkt die jaarlijks op de derde dinsdag in oktober wordt gehouden in het Noord-Drentse dorp Zuidlaren\, Nederland. \nDe markt staat bekend als Europa’s grootste najaarsmarkt voor paarden en wordt door rond de 150.000 mensen bezocht\, vooral Nederlanders\, maar vanwege de paardenhandel zijn er ook vele Duitsers\, Belgen\, Denen\, Polen en Italianen op de markt te vinden. Naast de paardenmarkt wordt een warenmarkt georganiseerd met kramen verspreid over 4\,2 kilometer. Hier zijn allerlei dingen te koop waaronder de bekende “Zuidlaarderbol“. Ook worden er verschillende activiteiten rond de markt georganiseerd. De eerste vermelding van de markt dateert uit 1701. Er is ook een oorkonde uit 1232 waarin gesproken wordt over een markt in ‘Laren’\, maar tegenwoordig wordt het waarschijnlijker geacht dat deze markt zich destijds in Noordlaren bevond. Vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog dacht men echter dat dit jaartal met zekerheid op Zuidlaren moest slaan en om in 1950 het ‘750-jarig bestaan’ te kunnen vieren werd gemakshalve als beginjaar 1201 genomen. \nLinks:\nZuidlaardermarkt

DESCRIPTION:Pointer is een Nederlands onderzoeksjournalistiek platform van KRO-NCRV op tv\, radio en online. \nDe makers van Pointer doen (dossier)onderzoek naar maatschappelijke onderwerpen\, nieuws en misstanden. Ze maken hierbij gebruik van datajournalistiek\, crowdsourcing en open source intelligentie. Input van kijkers en luisteraars staat centraal bij de onderzoeken. Er staan zoveel huizen\, kantoren en winkels in Nederland leeg dat alle inwoners van de stad Utrecht erin zouden kunnen wonen. Dit blijkt uit een berekening van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek en het journalistieke platform Pointer (KRO-NCRV). De leegstand komt neer op 200.000 nieuwbouwappartementen. In totaal staat er 17\,8 miljoen vierkante meter aan panden structureel leeg\, aldus het CBS. Er zit al zeker een jaar geen bewoner of huurder in. Ook wordt er geen of nauwelijks energie afgenomen in deze gebouwen. Al die leegstand bij elkaar\, is evenveel oppervlak als 200.000 standaard nieuwbouwappartementen. Dat zou genoeg plek bieden voor alle inwoners van Utrecht (377.000). DESCRIPTION:Die Frankfurter Buchmesse (Boekenbeurs Frankfurt) ist eine internationale Buchmesse\, die jährlich im Oktober auf dem Gelände der Messe Frankfurt stattfindet. \nSie wurde 1949 vom Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels gegründet. Seit 1976 wurden regionale und thematische Schwerpunkte gebildet; seit 1988 stellt sie in jedem Jahr die Literatur und Kultur eines Gastlandes besonders heraus. Während der Buchmesse werden der Deutsche Buchpreis\, der Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels\, der Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis und viele andere Branchenauszeichnungen verliehen. Die Frankfurter Buchmesse hat eine mehr als 500-jährige Tradition. Eine Buchmesse in Frankfurt am Main gab es schon in der frühen Neuzeit\, nachdem Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz\, nur wenige Kilometer von Frankfurt entfernt\, den Buchdruck revolutioniert hatte und die Buchdrucker Johannes Fust\, Peter Schöffer und Konrad Henckis die Frankfurter Messe zum Umschlagsort des den Handschriftenhandel ablösenden Verlagsbuchhandels machten. Die Buchmesse dient als Fachmesse in erster Linie Verlegern\, Literaturagenten\,  Buchhändlern\, Bibliothekaren\, Wissenschaftlern\, Illustratoren\, Dienstleistern\, Filmproduzenten\, Übersetzern\, Druckern\, Verbänden\, Künstlern\, Autoren\, Antiquaren\, aber auch Software- und Multimedia-Anbietern zur Vorstellung ihres Angebots und dem Abschluss von Geschäften. \nDer Handel mit Buchlizenzen und -rechten findet in einem eigenen Agentencenter statt. Dieses sogenannte B2B-Geschäft zwischen Unternehmen steht im Mittelpunkt der Messe\, die sich erst in zweiter Linie an das allgemeine Publikum richtet\, dem nur an den letzten beiden Messetagen Zugang gewährt wird. Daneben wird die Messe zunehmend als Produktionsort für Rundfunksendungen genutzt. Hörfunk- und Fernsehsender veranstalten während der Messetage auf einer eigenen Bühne Gesprächssendungen\, die vielfach live übertragen oder im Internet gestreamt werden\, wie zum Beispiel Das Blaue Sofa des ZDF (bis 2022) oder die Lesebühne von ARD\, ZDF und 3sat. Die Bedeutung der journalistischen Angebote spiegelt sich in der großen Zahl akkreditierter Berichterstatter wider. Im Jahr 2016 berichteten rund 10.000 Journalisten von der Messe; darunter waren auch 2.000 Blogger. Die Frankfurter Buchmesse fördert in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Auswärtigen Amt\, dem Goethe-Institut und anderen Institutionen die Übersetzung deutscher Literatur im Ausland. Dazu werden jedes Jahr rund 25 Beteiligungen an Buchmessen in aller Welt organisiert. \nZur Übersetzungsförderung wurden seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Goethe-Institut Buchinformationszentren gegründet\, die inzwischen allerdings unter der Bezeichnung German Book Office stark in die Vertriebsarbeit der Messe eingebunden sind. Derzeit gibt es ständige Präsenzen in New York\, Peking\, Moskau\, Bukarest und New Delhi. Darüber hinaus existieren Stipendienprogramme wie das vom Auswärtigen Amt finanzierte Einladungsprogramm für Verleger aus Afrika\, Asien und Lateinamerika und das Frankfurt Fellowship\, das sich an den verlegerischen Nachwuchs richtet. Zum 50. Er worden films vertoond uit de hele wereld\, er is een selectie van de beste televisieprogramma’s voor de jeugd en er worden activiteiten georganiseerd rondom de nieuwste ontwikkelingen van nieuwe media in het MediaLab. Daarnaast is er Cinekid for Professionals met een seminarprogramma en coproductiemarkten\, waar mediaprofessionals van over de hele wereld langskomen. Cinekid begon in 1986 als een nieuw initiatief in De Meervaart in Amsterdam Osdorp. Gedurende het hele jaar richt Cinekid zich op media-educatieprojecten voor kinderen in het primair onderwijs. DESCRIPTION:As a signpost in place and a source point of time\, Gaza is a turning point globally\, and it is also a marker of the long-felt conditions of virtuality that have in part defined Palestinian experience since the 1948 Al Nakba [the catastrophe] when the mass displacement\, dispossession\, and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by the Israeli state began. \nWith the abundance of dystopian and apocalyptic images saturating viewers’ senses for two years by the time we gather in October\, Virtual Remains opens up the question: how do we as receivers of this image stream inhabit imaginaries of Gaza and of Palestine\, and how do they\, as locus and ethos\, inhabit us? Starting here\, the 2025 festival is a reflection on virtuality in all its dimensions: as representation\, imagination\, index\, projection\, embodiment\, and the truth claims attached to (moving) images. This year’s festival will once again unfold over four days\, beginning with an opening night premiere on Thursday\, 9 October and continuing with day and evening activities throughout the weekend. Alongside our rich schedule of screenings featuring over twenty-five films by Palestinian directors with special introductions and post-screening discussions\, the 2025 programme also comprises a range of parallel events\, including a series of dialogue sessions and hands-on workshops\, as well as our always popular olive oil tasting and a very special interactive keynote. To realise the programme\, we are pleased to be continuing our collaborations with the arthouse theaters Kriterion\, Lab111\, Studio/K\, and Ventilator Cinema\, and to be embarking on new partnerships with the arts organisations De Appel and Framer Framed\, and the collective dance studio Jakoozi. DESCRIPTION:Banned Books Week is an annual awareness campaign promoted by the American Library Association (ALA) and Amnesty International\, that celebrates the freedom to read\, draws attention to banned and challenged books\, and highlights persecuted individuals. \nHeld in late September or early October since 1982\, the United States campaign “stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them” and the requirement to keep material publicly available so that people can develop their own conclusions and opinions. The international campaign notes individuals “persecuted because of the writings that they produce\, circulate or read.” Some of the events that occur during Banned Book Week are The Virtual Read-Out and The First Amendment Film Festival. The theme for Banned Books Week 2025: “Censorship Is So 1984. Read for Your Rights.” Banned Books Week will take place October 5 – 11\, 2025. Current efforts to ban books and information held in schools\, libraries\, archives\, and bookstores are a truth close to fiction – namely\, the depiction of extreme censorship by an oppressive regime in George Orwell’s cautionary and prescient tale 1984. The Banned Books Week 2025 theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us\, that censorship has no place in contemporary society\, and that we must defend our rights. ALA recently released the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2024 list and the State of America’s Libraries Report. The majority of book censorship attempts that ALA tracked in 2024 come from organized movements. Pressure groups and government entities that include elected officials\, board members\, and administrators initiated 72% of demands to censor books in school and public libraries. \nThe 120 titles most frequently targeted for censorship during 2024 are all identified on partisan book rating sites\, which provide tools for activists to demand the censorship of library books.  Additionally\, PEN America recorded the highest instances of book censorship in schools and the highest number of unique titles banned during the 2023-2024 school year – more than 4\,000 unique titles were removed in over 10\,000 instances of book bans. PEN America also tracked the influence of pressure groups\, finding that they have undertaken efforts to remove materials in nearly every state. Banned Books Week launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of book challenges in libraries\, schools\, and bookstores. The Banned Books Week Coalition\, an international alliance of diverse organizations joined by a commitment to increase awareness of the annual celebration of the freedom to read\, appoints an honorary chair and youth honorary chair to lead Banned Books Week. Past honorary chairs include filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Origin\, 2024)\, literacy champion LeVar Burton (Reading Rainbow\, 2023)\, and banned authors George M. DESCRIPTION:The hobbits are described as being of three types\, Harfoots\, Fallohides\, and Stoors\, all deriving from a region to the east of the Shire\, in particular the Angle between two rivers\, and migrating to the Shire at different times.\nTolkien Week is observed as the calendar week\, starting on Sunday\, containing September 22\, which is always observed as Hobbit Day. \nBoth celebrations began in 1978. Hobbit Day in particular\, and Tolkien Week as well\, have gained some measure of legal dignity through a variety of proclamations\, declarations\, tributes and similar governmental documents prepared by elected officials who support the Society\, its goals and the observance of these holidays. Both events have attracted bipartisan support\, from the county courthouse to the White House and U.S. Capitol. Tolkien Week honors J. R. R. Tolkien and his son and editor\, Christopher J.R. Tolkien\, and celebrates the Middle-earth cycle: The Silmarillion\, The Hobbit\, The Lord of the Rings (The Fellowship of the Ring\, The Two Towers\, The Return of the King)\, Unfinished Tales\, and The History of Middle-earth. \nHobbit Day and Tolkien Week fall during the “Back to School” season and can create a bright new interest for students in literature classes and libraries. A number of schools and libraries host seminars and art shows during the week. Those with the facilities and budget sometimes arrange for a showing of one or more of the motion pictures based on the works. A few have even presented marathon showings of the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings films! \nThe most popular method of observing Tolkien Week is the library\, bookstore or school display.  Most libraries have bulletin boards or cases\, and some have enclosed display tables and other facilities up to and including display windows of considerable size. Many librarians among our members and friends create displays; other members contact their libraries and assist in preparing displays. The same is certainly true of schools. Tolkien Week displays and seminars have been held in places ranging from distinguished universities to libraries located in prisons\, mental institutions\, and army bases.  If your activities include presentation of research papers or other materials suitable for publication\, please consider submitting the available works to the Society for possible publication in Minas Tirith Evening-Star: Journal of the American Tolkien Society. \nHobbit Day\, on the other hand\, is scheduled to fall on the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins – two fictional characters in J. R. R. Tolkien’s popular set of books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings –  mutual birthday\, the date of the Long Awaited Party (translated in text by Tolkien as September 22).  This is perhaps the oldest festal observance associated with Tolkien fandom.  Celebration actually predates the formal designation of the holiday. A variety of names have been applied to the date and the celebrations. In large part\, Hobbit Day is usually taken up with the fun activities – the feasts\, games\, costume events\, fireworks and the like. Hobbit Day is a virtually ideal holiday\, incorporating attractive elements of several others: the masquerade fun of Halloween\, the feast of Thanksgiving\, the exchange of greeting cards and gifts associated with Christmas and birthdays\, the picnic atmosphere of Labor Day and Memorial Day\, the fireworks of Independence Day (or Guy Fawkes Day)… and the study and reflection associated with many commemorative days throughout the year. \nAccording to the fictional setting\, Bilbo was born in the year of 2890 and Frodo in the year of 2968 in the Third Age (1290 and 1368 respectively in Shire-Reckoning.) Tolkien Week is the week containing Hobbit Day. The Fellowship of the Ring opened with a celebration of Bilbo’s birthday. It was a large party with food\, fireworks\, dancing and much merriment. Some Tolkien fans celebrate by emulating the hobbits’ parties. Other simply go barefoot in honour of the hobbits\, who don’t wear shoes. Some schools and libraries use this as an opportunity to pique interest in Tolkien’s work by putting up displays and hosting events. The Lord of the Rings: “There is no record of the Shire-folk commemorating either March 25 or September 22; but in the Westfarthing\, especially in the country round Hobbiton Hill\, there grew a custom of making holiday and dancing in the Party Field\, when weather permitted\, on April 6.” In Gondor\, however\, “in honour of Frodo Yavannie 30\, which corresponded to the former September 22\, his birthday\, was made a festival\, and the leap-year was provided for by doubling this feast\, called Cormare or Ringday.” \nLinks:\nHobbit Day and Tolkien Week

DESCRIPTION:Open Monumentendagen worden in Europese landen jaarlijks georganiseerd in de maand september\, gewoonlijk niet vrij toegankelijke monumenten worden dan gedurende een of meer dagen opengesteld voor publiek. \nDe Europese Open Monumentendagen vonden voor het eerst plaats in 1991. Daarvoor waren er al lokale initiatieven: in 1984 vond in Frankrijk de eerste Journée Portes Ouvertes plaats\, en in Nederland was de eerste Open Monumentendag in 1987. Vlaanderen volgde in 1989. Naar aanleiding van het succes van de Franse en Nederlandse dagen\, organiseerde het Comité voor Cultureel Erfgoed van de Raad van Europa in 1989 een internationale bijeenkomst\, waarbij overleg plaatsvond over eventuele Europese Open Monumentendagen. De plannen die tijdens deze bijeenkomst bedacht zijn\, werden door de Raad van Europa en de Nederlandse Stichting Open Monumentendag verder uitgewerkt. Dit leidde tot de eerste European Heritage Days in 1991. In dat jaar deden er elf landen mee\, in 2005 waren het er 47. In 2017 waren er vijftig staten die de Europese Culturele Conventie ondertekenden aangesloten bij European Heritage Days en er werden 70.000 georganiseerd. Naast het openstellen van gebouwen worden er activiteiten georganiseerd voor jong en oud\, zoals wandelingen\, fietstochten\, boottochten en lezingen. \nHet thema voor 2025 is “Erfgoed & Architectuur – Gebouw(d) om te blijven”. In 1975 riep de Raad van Europa het jaar uit tot het “Europese Jaar van het Architectonisch Erfgoed”. Dit initiatief hielp om architectuur te erkennen als een belangrijk onderdeel van onze leefomgeving. Het stimuleerde de zorg voor historische gebouwen in heel Europa\, waardoor de basis werd gelegd voor de monumentenzorg zoals we die nu kennen. Precies vijftig jaar later\, tijdens Open Monumentendag 2025\, wordt stilgestaan bij dit bijzondere jubileum en wordt het architectonische erfgoed van Nederland in de schijnwerpers gezet. De slogan ‘Gebouw(d) om te blijven’ benadrukt de waarde van de verscheidenheid aan historische gebouwen die ons land verrijken en nodigt uit om na te denken over de toekomst van dit erfgoed. Architectuur is meer dan bakstenen en beton. In The Bibi Files laten prijswinnend regisseur Alexis Bloom en Oscarwinnend producent Alex Gibney een verborgen wereld van corruptie en machtsmisbruik zien\, waarbij zowel de media- als de zakenwereld en Netanyahu’s familie betrokken zijn. Ze doen dit aan de hand van nooit eerder vertoonde video’s van politieverhoren van Netanyahu zelf\, zijn familie\, vertrouwelingen en geldschieters. De gelekte politieverhoren en interviews worden afgewisseld met archiefbeelden van Netanyahu’s politieke opkomst\, die laten zien hoe verdeeld de staat Israël is geworden tijdens zijn dertigjarig premierschap. Observaties en anekdotes van ingewijden schetsen een portret van een leider die zich onder andere inlaat met radicaal-rechtse extremisten om justitie te ontlopen\, en die volledig is gefocust op het behouden van macht en controle. De bioscoopversie van The Bibi Files (120 min) ging begin 2025 in première op het Movies that Matter Filmfestival in Den Haag. DESCRIPTION:Zomergasten is een Nederlands televisieprogramma van de VPRO dat elk jaar in de zomer\, meer bepaald rond augustus\, op zondagavond rechtstreeks uitgezonden wordt. \nHet programma bestaat sinds 1988. In een avondvullend programma mag iedere zondag een bekende of interessante Nederlander\, Vlaming of Nederlandssprekende buitenlander zijn of haar favoriete televisieavond samenstellen. De gast komt meestal uit de literatuur\, wetenschap\, televisie\, de politiek of het bedrijfsleven. De gekozen fragmenten worden getoond en aan de hand daarvan wordt de gast geïnterviewd door een interviewer/presentator. Het programma is gaandeweg uitgegroeid tot een van de bekendste programma’s van de Nederlandse publieke omroep. Sinds 2003 wordt na elke aflevering een film uitgezonden die door de gast van de avond is uitgekozen. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSchrijver Herman Koch (Arnhem\, 1953) is op 31 augustus de zesde en tevens laatste gast in VPRO Zomergasten. Griet Op de Beeck interviewt Koch over zijn ideale televisieavond. Koch: ‘Mijn ideale Zomergasten-publiek is een gelukkig echtpaar dat de hele avond stilletjes op de bank zit en elkaar tijdens de aftiteling alleen even zachtjes in de hand knijpt.’ Herman Koch veroverde de harten van heel Nederland als een van de makers en gezichten van het legendarische VPRO-programma Jiskefet (1995-2005)\, dit jaar bekroond met de Ere Zilveren Nipkowschijf. Wereldwijd werd hij beroemd met zijn roman Het diner (2009)\, waarin twee echtparen tijdens een chic etentje om een gruwelijke daad van hun zoons heen praten. Het boek werd een internationale bestseller\, stond wekenlang op de bestsellerlijst van The New York Times met de hoogste notering voor een Nederlandse roman ooit\, werd het meest vertaalde Nederlandse boek én het werd in vijf landen verfilmd. Ook zijn latere romans werden bestsellers in binnen- en buitenland. Koch wordt geprezen voor de droog ironische manier waarop hij in zijn boeken het menselijk moreel ongemak observeert en voor zijn genadeloos oog voor de dunne laag beschaving waarachter we ons verschuilen. \nOp 2 december 2025 maakte de VPRO bekend te hebben besloten om vanwege de NPO-bezuinigingen\, na 37 jaar te stoppen met Zomergasten. De kijkcijfers waren de laatste seizoenen overigens flink gedaald. Dagblad NRC sprak over het seizoen 2024 zelfs van een “kijkcijferdrama“. In het laatste seizoen bedroegen de kijkcijfers rond de 290.000 kijkers per aflevering. Absoluut dieptepunt was de uitzending in 2024 met journaliste Garrie van Pinxteren die slechts 145.000 kijkers trok (exclusief uitgesteld kijken).
