DESCRIPTION:San Diego Comic-Con International is a comic book convention and nonprofit multi-genre entertainment event held annually in San Diego\, California\, since 1970; the name\, as given on its website\, is Comic-Con International: San Diego; but it is commonly known simply as Comic-Con or the San Diego Comic-Con or SDCC. \nThe convention was founded as the Golden State Comic Book Convention in 1970 by a group of San Diegans that included Shel Dorf\, Richard Alf\, Ken Krueger\, Ron Graf\, and Mike Towry; later\, it was called the “San Diego Comic Book Convention”\, Dorf said during an interview that he hoped the first Con would bring in 500 attendees. It is a four-day event (Thursday–Sunday) held during the summer (in July since 2003) at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego. On the Wednesday evening prior to the official opening\, professionals\, exhibitors\, and pre-registered guests for all four days can attend a pre-event “Preview Night” to give attendees the opportunity to walk the exhibit hall and see what will be available during the convention. \nComic-Con International also produces WonderCon\, held in Anaheim\, and SAM: Storytelling Across Media\, a conference held in 2016 in San Francisco and beginning in 2018 annually at the Comic-Con Museum in San Diego. Since 1974\, Comic-Con has bestowed its annual Inkpot Award on guests and persons of interest in the popular arts industries\, as well as on members of Comic-Con’s board of directors and the Convention committee. It is also the home of the Will Eisner Awards. Originally showcasing primarily comic books and science fiction/fantasy related film\, television\, and similar popular arts\, the convention has since included a larger range of pop culture and entertainment elements across virtually all genres\, including horror\, Western animation\, anime\, comics\, manga\, toys\, collectible card games\, video games\, webcomics\, and fantasy novels. DESCRIPTION:Het Kwaku Summer Festival (voorheen het Kwakoe Zomerfestival) wordt sinds 1975 bijna elk jaar tijdens een aantal weekeinden in de zomer gehouden in het Nelson Mandelapark in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. \nHet is van origine een Surinaams festival\, maar het heeft zich ontwikkeld tot een multicultureel festival. Op woensdag 1 juli 1863 werd de slavernij in Suriname afgeschaft. Een naam die vanuit de slavernijtijd verbonden is aan woensdag is Kwaku. Zonen van de Akan in Ghana die op woensdag geboren werden kregen de naam Kwaku. Het festival is ontstaan in 1975 als voetbaltoernooi\, georganiseerd door Stichting Jongeren Centrum Kwakoe. Het speelde zich aanvankelijk af op de sportvelden van SV Bijlmer\, op de locatie van het huidige Bijlmerplein in Amsterdam Zuidoost. In 1983 verhuisde het festival naar de huidige locatie in het Nelson Mandelapark dat in die tijd Bijlmerpark heette. Eind jaren negentig dienden zowel het jongerencentrum Kwakoe als de organisatie van het festival een vergunningaanvraag in. De festivalorganisatie Stichting Kwakoe Events onder leiding van Winston Kout kreeg de vergunning toegewezen en heeft het festival sindsdien georganiseerd. Van een louter Surinaams feest\, voor arme Surinamers uit de Bijlmerhoogbouw die geen geld hebben om op vakantie te gaan\, ontwikkelde het festival zich sindsdien tot een multicultureel festival dat zich ook op Antillianen en Afrikanen richt. Op zondag 27 juli 2008 werd tijdens het Kwakoe Zomerfestival voor het eerst de Roze Zondag georganiseerd\, een initiatief van de Surinaamse lhbt-activist Mikel Haman. Als eerbetoon wordt tijdens de Roze Zondag van 2018 voor het eerst de Mikel Haman Award uitgereikt aan een persoon die zich op bijzondere wijze voor de positie van lhbt’ers heeft ingezet. \nLinks:\nKwaku festival

DESCRIPTION:Barbershop Music Appreciation Day takes place on July 13 every year. \nThe best way to join in Barbershop Music Appreciation Day is to go straight into a barbershop and enjoy the music that you can hear inside. In 2005\, “The Sweet Adelines International” have founded this cheery holiday on their 60th anniversary. Barbershop vocal harmony\, as codified during the barbershop revival era (1930s–present)\, is a style of a cappella close harmony\, or unaccompanied vocal music\, characterized by consonant four-part chords for every melody note in a primarily homorhythmic texture. Each of the four parts has its own role: generally\, the lead sings the melody\, the tenor harmonizes above the melody\, the bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes\, and the baritone completes the chord\, usually below the lead. The melody is not usually sung by the tenor or baritone\, except for an infrequent note or two to avoid awkward voice leading\, in tags or codas\, or when some appropriate embellishment can be created. One characteristic feature of barbershop harmony is the use of what is known as “snakes” and “swipes”. This is when a chord is altered by a change in one or more non-melodic voices. Occasional passages may be sung by fewer than four voice parts. \nBarbershop music is generally performed by either a barbershop quartet\, a group of four singers with one on each vocal part\, or a barbershop chorus\, which closely resembles a choir with the notable exception of the genre of music. According to the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS)\, “Barbershop music features songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies\, whose tones clearly define a tonal center and imply major and minor chords and barbershop (dominant and secondary dominant) seventh chords that resolve primarily around the circle of fifths\, while making frequent use of other resolutions.” Slower barbershop songs\, especially ballads\, often eschew a continuous beat\, and notes are often held (or sped up) ad libitum. Except for the bass\, the voice parts in barbershop singing do not correspond closely to their classical music counterparts; the tenor range and tessitura are similar to those of the classical countertenor\, the baritone resembles the Heldentenor or lyric baritone in range and a tenor in tessitura\, and the lead generally corresponds to the tenor of classical repertoire\, with some singers possessing a tessitura more similar to that of a high baritone. DESCRIPTION:The Sky at Night is a monthly documentary television programme on astronomy produced by the BBC. \nThe show had the same permanent presenter\, Patrick Moore\, from its first broadcast on 24 April 1957 until 7 January 2013. The latter date was a posthumous broadcast\, which followed Moore’s death on 9 December 2012. This made it the longest-running programme with the same presenter in television history. Many early episodes are missing\, either because the tapes were wiped\, thrown out\, or because the episode was broadcast live and never recorded in the first place. \nBeginning with the 3 February 2013 edition\, the show was co-presented by Lucie Green and Chris Lintott. Since December 2013 Maggie Aderin-Pocock has been a presenter. The programme’s opening and closing theme music is “At the Castle Gate”\, from the incidental music to Pelléas et Mélisande\, written in 1905 by Jean Sibelius\, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. \nThis episode:\nIn July 2022\, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) released its first images. They were visually stunning\, and it was clear they provided more detail of stars\, galaxies and planets than ever before. But for the scientists waiting on the data\, this was just the beginning of their journey to discover what the new telescope would reveal. Since then\, they have been working hard and publishing papers on all the data JWST has been sending back. \nTwo years ago\, just after the first images were released\, Chris Lintott set off on a road trip to meet some of the scientists that were excitedly waiting on the first data. He wanted to find out what they hoped it could reveal. To mark the second anniversary Chris\, along with fellow presenters Maggie Aderin-Pocock and George Dransfield\, headed off to meet scientists old and new\, to find out what the Webb Telescope has told us so far. \nChris gives us a run-down of the highs and lows the Webb Telescope has been through and the other discoveries it has made. Maggie is off to Bristol University to revisit Dr Hannah Wakeford who has been using JWST data to reveal what interesting chemicals exoplanet atmospheres contain. \nGeorge meets Professor Leigh Fletcher at the University of Leicester. When Chris met him two years ago\, only one JWST image of Jupiter had been released. Now\, he has data from all four of the outer planets of the solar system\, and they have all thrown up surprises. JWST has revealed new jet streams on Jupiter and provided a greater understanding of its Galilean moons. Seasonal changes on Saturn have now been documented\, and Uranus and Neptune have thrown up quirks that need another few years of work to understand. \nChris also visits the University of Cambridge to meet Dr Sandro Tacchella\, who has been part of a team looking back at some of the earliest galaxies. DESCRIPTION:Stichting Queer Amsterdam en Stichting Pride Amsterdam organiseren samen Queer & Pride Amsterdam 2024. \nBeide organisaties verzorgen een deel van het programma: Stichting Queer Amsterdam van 3 juli tot en met 4 augustus en Stichting Pride Amsterdam van 27 juli tot en met 4 augustus. De eerste week van Queer & Pride Amsterdam samengesteld voor en door de community. Dit jaar focussen de evenementen zich (nog) meer op ons verenigd verzet\, het aanvullen van onze energie en het zelf bepalen van onze toekomst.\n\nQueer Amsterdam staat voor het bevorderen van gelijkwaardigheid\, het bestrijden van kansenongelijkheid en het versterken van de sociaal-maatschappelijke en economische positie van álle mensen die zich identificeren als LGBTQIAP+. Queer Amsterdam vindt het belangrijk om gender los te laten\, verbinding te vinden bij elkaar en bewustwording te creëren vanuit een intersectioneel perspectief. Anti-discriminiatie op alle vlakken is één van onze kernwaardes. Queer Amsterdam is ontstaan als een tegenbeweging tegen de gevestigde orde zodat de dringende oproep om verandering eindelijk beantwoord kan worden. De manier waarop onze samenleving verandert\, zorgt ervoor dat de uitdagingen voor LGBTQIAP+ personen toeneemt. Hierdoor wordt de kloof tussen onze realiteit en onze utopie alleen maar groter. Toch is het hebben van een gemeenschap nu belangrijker dan ooit. Wanneer we ons met elkaar verenigen\, voeden we het idee dat elke stem die we verheffen en elke stap die we zetten bijdraagt aan een betere toekomst. Ga met ons mee op een reis van gezamenlijk verzet en empowerment\, op weg naar een toekomst waarin we alles van jou volledig kunnen vieren. Door ons gezamenlijk te verzetten\, weer op te laden en zelf te bepalen hoe onze toekomst eruit ziet\, willen we onze gemeenschap ondersteunen in de strijd voor een toekomst waarin organisaties als Queer Amsterdam niet meer nodig zijn.\n\nPride Amsterdam staat dit jaar in het teken van verbinding met als thema TOGETHER. In een polariserende samenleving komt de lhbtiqa+-community regelmatig onbedoeld tegenover elkaar te staan\, in plaats van naast elkaar. Juist in een tijd waar regenboog-identiteiten internationaal vaker onder druk staan en mensen vrijheden verliezen\, is het belangrijk dat iedereen elkaar weer weet te vinden. Samen sterker\, ondanks onze verschillen. En samen sterker\, dankzij onze verschillen. We hebben elkaar nodig; ongeacht of iemand nu lhbtiqa+ of ally/ bondgenoot is. Ongeacht of we onze persoonlijke uitdagingen meemaken op het platteland of in de stad\, op ons werk of bij onze familie. Bij Pride Amsterdam vieren we de boodschap van liefde voor onze dierbaren\, maar ook de liefde voor hen die verder van ons afstaan\, maar met vergelijkbare uitdagingen te maken krijgen vanwege hun seksuele oriëntatie\, genderidentiteit en expressie\, of diversiteit in geslachtsontwikkeling.
