At least 45% of the estimated 7000 languages spoken in the world are endangered. Only a few hundred languages have genuinely been given a place in education systems and the public domain\, and less than a hundred are used in the digital world. Multilingual and multicultural societies exist through their languages\, which transmit and preserve traditional knowledge and cultures in a sustainable way. Multilingual and multicultural societies thrive through the preservation of their languages\, which serve as conduits for traditional knowledge and cultural heritage. However\, linguistic diversity faces increasing threats as more languages vanish. The 25th anniversary of International Mother Language Day celebrates a quarter-century of efforts to preserve linguistic diversity and promote mother tongues. This milestone emphasizes the importance of language preservation in safeguarding cultural heritage\, improving education\, and fostering more peaceful societies. \nCurrently\, 40% of the global population lacks access to education in their native language\, a figure that exceeds 90% in certain regions. Research underscores the benefits of using learners’ native languages in education\, fostering better learning outcomes\, self-esteem\, and critical thinking skills. This approach also supports intergenerational learning and cultural preservation. International Mother Language Day\, first proclaimed by UNESCO and later adopted by the UN General Assembly\, underscores the role of languages in promoting inclusion and achieving Sustainable Development Goals. 2025 theme: Silver Jubilee Celebration of International Mother Language Day. Languages are essential to education and sustainable development\, serving as the primary means through which knowledge is transferred and cultures are preserved. DESCRIPTION:World Radio Day is an observance day held annually on 13 February to celebrate radio as a medium. It was proclaimed on 3 November 2011 by UNESCO’s 36th General Conference after originally being proposed by the Kingdom of Spain. \nFollowing a request from the Spanish Radio Academy on 20 September 2010\, Spain proposed that the UNESCO Executive Board include an agenda item on the proclamation of a World Radio Day. UNESCO’s Executive Board approved the agenda item in its provisional agenda for the proclamation of a “World Radio Day” on 29 September 2011. UNESCO carried out a wide consultation in 2011 with diverse stakeholders\, such as broadcasting associations\, UN agencies\, funds and programmes\, relevant NGOs\, foundations and bilateral development agencies\, as well as UNESCO Permanent Delegations and National Commissions for UNESCO. Among the answers\, 91% were in favour of the project\, including official support from the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU)\, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU)\, the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB)\, the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU)\, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)\, the International Association of Broadcasting (IAB)\, the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA)\, the Organización de Telecomunicaciones Ibeoramericanas (OTI)\, BBC\, URTI\, Vatican Radio\, etc. The results of this consultation are available in UNESCO’s document 187 EX/13. The Board recommended to the UNESCO 36th session of the General Conference that it proclaim a World Radio Day at its 36th session\, and that this day be celebrated by UNESCO on 13 February\, the anniversary of the day that the United Nations established the United Nations Radio in 1946. \nIt also invited all United Nations Member States\, organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations\, professional associations and broadcasting unions\, as well as civil society\, including non-governmental organizations and individuals\, to duly celebrate World Radio Day\, in the way that each considers most adequate. The board further requested that UNESCO’s Director-General bring the resolution to the attention of the Secretary-General of the United Nations\, so that World Radio Day could be endorsed by the General Assembly and celebrated by the whole system. The matter was subsequently treated by UNESCO’s General Conference\, which adopted resolution contained in the file 36 C/63. World Radio Day was thus unanimously proclaimed by all Member States of UNESCO in November 2011. In December 2012\, The General Assembly of the UN endorsed the proclamation of World Radio Day\, thereby becoming a day to be celebrated by all UN agencies\, funds and programmes and their partners. Het programma volgde in 2023 het NTR-programma Atlas op als wetenschapsprogramma van de Nederlandse Publieke Omroep. \nIn het programma gaan presentatoren Petra Grijzen en Lara Billie Rense op zoek naar oplossingen voor actuele problemen in de wereld. Focus is de crossmediale titel van het platform NTR Wetenschap. Naast het tv-programma is er de Focus-podcast die wordt gepresenteerd door Lara Billie Rense. Het platform heeft een YouTube-kanaal en is actief op Facebook\, X\, LinkedIn\, Instagram en TikTok. \nSteeds vaker laten gevaarlijke bacteriën zich niet doden door antibiotica. Een toekomst waarin zelfs een blaasontsteking dodelijk kan zijn\, is reëel. In de strijd tegen toenemende resistentie richten wetenschappers hun pijlen op virussen die specifiek één soort bacterie doden: bacteriofagen of fagen. Ze komen o.a. uit het riool. Nederlandse patiënten zijn voor fagentherapie nog vaak aangewezen op het buitenland. Ger van het Einde had een resistente bacterie in zijn schouder die constante pijn veroorzaakte. Toen een armamputatie werd geopperd\, ging hij zelf op zoek naar fagen. DESCRIPTION:Groundhog Day (bosmarmottendag) is een feestdag die in de Verenigde Staten en Canada elk jaar op 2 februari wordt gevierd.\n\nOp deze dag zou de bosmarmot (Engels: groundhog) volgens folklore ontwaken uit zijn winterslaap en zich buiten zijn hol wagen. Volgens de traditie zou de bosmarmot het einde van de winter kunnen voorspellen op grond van zijn eigen schaduw. Als de bosmarmot op Groundhog Day zijn eigen schaduw ziet\, zal hij terugkeren naar zijn hol en zal de winter nog zes weken duren. Mocht hij zijn schaduw niet zien en niet terugkeren naar zijn hol\, is het einde van de winter nabij. In veel plaatsjes wordt Groundhog Day gevierd met festivals waar mensen heenkomen om de bosmarmot te zien ontwaken. In onder andere Pennsylvania wordt Groundhog Day gevierd met zogenaamde fersommlinge; sociale evenementen waarbij eten wordt geserveerd\, toespraken worden gehouden\, en spellen worden georganiseerd. De grootste viering van Groundhog Day vindt plaats in Punxsutawney\, waar regelmatig tot 40.000 mensen op afkomen. De feestdag kreeg ook buiten Noord-Amerika meer bekendheid dankzij de komische film Groundhog Day uit 1993\, waarin het personage gespeeld door Bill Murray elke dag\, uitgerekend deze feestdag waar hij de grootste hekel aan heeft\, opnieuw beleeft. DESCRIPTION:Het International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is het grootste filmfestival van Nederland\, het wordt sinds 1972 jaarlijks in Rotterdam gehouden. \nSinds 2017 worden films getoond in Pathé Schouwburgplein\, Kino\, Cinerama\, LantarenVenster\, het Oude Luxor\, de Schouwburg\, De Doelen en Worm. Elk jaar gaat eind januari in Rotterdam het gros van de films in première die gedurende de rest van het jaar in Nederland te zien zullen zijn. Ook zijn er vele korte en lange films uit alle delen van de wereld te zien die buiten het festival niet meer in Nederland vertoond worden. Centraal staan de kleinere\, onafhankelijke en artistieke films van vaak weinig bekende regisseurs\, alhoewel de ‘betere’ Hollywoodfilm niet geschuwd wordt. Er zijn programmaonderdelen rond producties die zijn gefinancierd door het Hubert Bals Fonds\, retrospectieven van de ‘Filmmakers in Focus’\, forumdiscussies\, tentoonstellingen van videokunst\, enzovoort. Daarnaast is er tijdens het festival de CineMart waar filmmakers in contact kunnen komen met financiers. Het platform heeft een YouTube-kanaal en is actief op Facebook\, X\, LinkedIn\, Instagram en TikTok. \nVan een half jaar snotteren tot soms zelfs levensbedreigende situaties\, in Nederland hebben steeds meer mensen last van een allergie. Naar schatting heeft ongeveer 5% van de Nederlanders last van een voedselallergie en 20% van een luchtwegallergie\, zoals hooikoorts. Wat wordt nu precies bedoeld met een puzzel? Een puzzel is een probleem of enigma dat de vindingrijkheid van de oplosser test. In een eenvoudige puzzel is het de bedoeling om stukken op een logische manier samen te stellen om tot de gewenste oplossing te komen. Puzzels kunnen ook letters\, cijfers\, vormen en raadsels bevatten. De eerste legpuzzel ontstond rond 1760\, toen John Spilsbury\, een Britse graveur en kaartenmaker\, een kaart op een vel hout legde die hij vervolgens rond elk afzonderlijk land verzaagde. Spilsbury gebruikte het product om aardrijkskunde te onderwijzen.
