SUMMARY:Save the Observatory Science Centre Herstmonceux - petition
DESCRIPTION:The Observatory Science Centre is an educational charity which has called the Grade II listed\, former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux\, East Sussex\, home for the last 30 years. \nThe Canadian landlords\, Queen’s University\, who also own Herstmonceux Castle\, are not renewing the Science Centre’s lease\, so come the end of the 2026 season the Science Centre will be homeless. Over the years the science centre have worked tirelessly to fund and restore the site and the telescopes back to their former glory. The centre is a major venue for exhibitions\, lectures and educational programmes. The renovated telescopes provide a unique setting for the general public\, schools\, colleges\, and brownie and scout groups to learn about science\, space and the world around them. Whilst the Science Centre is in search for a new site to continue operations beyond 2026\, they should not have to leave the Observatory site at all and the historic site should be preserved for future generations as a great educational tool of significant historical importance. DESCRIPTION:Het Eurovisiesongfestival (Engels: Eurovision Song Contest\, Frans: Concours Eurovision de la Chanson) is sinds 24 mei 1956 een jaarlijkse presentatie en competitie van liedjes en wordt uitgezonden op televisie door heel Europa. \nSinds 1967 wordt het festival ook in landen buiten Europa uitgezonden. Verder is het festival op het internet te volgen. Het festival heeft de naam te danken aan het Eurovision TV Distribution Network\, een onderdeel van de Europese Radio-unie (EBU). Aan het songfestival kan ieder actief lid van de EBU meedoen\, waardoor ook enkele landen die net buiten Europa liggen mee kunnen doen. Het betreft landen in Noord-Afrika\, het Midden-Oosten en West-Azië. Sinds 2015 doet ook Australië mee\, hoewel het geen lid is van de EBU. \nOp 4 december 2025 is tijdens de Algemene Ledenvergadering van de EBU ondanks protest besloten dat Israël in 2026 kan deelnemen. Met deze gids bieden we jullie als collega-instellingen een handvat bij het organiseren van eigen activiteiten die bijdragen aan dit doel. Of je nu kiest voor een crisis- oefening\, een workshop risicobeheer of een publiekslezing\, elk initiatief draagt bij aan een veerkrachtigere erfgoedsector in deze uitdagende tijden. DESCRIPTION:Oerrock is een driedaags rock-/popfestival in Ureterp (Friesland)\, dat sinds 2000 jaarlijks plaatsvindt en wordt sinds 2009 gehouden in het Hemelvaartweekend. \nBehalve het festival worden sinds 2004 de Oerrock Play-Offs gehouden. Deze werden in het leven geroepen om ook de wat minder bekende bands een kans te geven voor een groot publiek op te treden. Eerst worden er vier voorronden gehouden\, waarna de winnaars het in de finale tegen elkaar opnemen. SUMMARY:Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake 2026
DESCRIPTION:De Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake is een jaarlijks sportevenement in het gebied Cotswolds in Gloucestershire. \nHet evenement was in eerste instantie door en voor de mensen die in Brockworth wonen\, maar tegenwoordig komen de deelnemers uit alle delen van de wereld. Vanaf de top van Cooper’s Hill wordt een Double Gloucester-kaas naar beneden gerold en de deelnemers rennen erachteraan. De eerste die de finish onderaan de heuvel passeert\, wint de kaas. In theorie is het de bedoeling dat de deelnemers de kaas proberen te vangen\, maar dit lukt in de praktijk niet\, want de kaas heeft één seconde voorsprong en kan snelheden tot zo’n 100 kilometer per uur bereiken. Als gevolg van de steilheid en het ongelijke oppervlak van de heuvel raakt gewoonlijk een flink aantal deelnemers gewond. DESCRIPTION:Stripdagen Haarlem is een stripfestival dat sinds 1992 om het jaar georganiseerd wordt in Haarlem. \nHet vrij toegankelijke festival bestaat met name uit tentoonstellingen\, beurzen\, lezingen en kinderactiviteiten. De Stripdagen Haarlem worden ieder even jaar georganiseerd door Stichting Beeldverhaal Nederland. Hoewel er op verschillende plekken in Haarlem activiteiten zijn\, concentreert het festival zich sinds 2024 in de koepelgevangenis. Voorheen vond een deel van de beurzen plaats in De Philharmonie en langs de Grote Kerk richting de Grote Markt. Het stripfestival wordt elke editie door ongeveer 30.000 tot 35.000 mensen bezocht. DESCRIPTION:Pinkpop is een jaarlijks\, driedaags popfestival in de Nederlands-Limburgse gemeente Landgraaf\, dat sinds 1970 normaal gesproken in het weekeinde van Pinksteren plaatsvindt. \nHet festival duurt sinds 1996 drie dagen en trekt per dag tienduizenden bezoekers. Pinkpop is het langstlopende jaarlijkse popfestival ter wereld. Het festival is een aantal keren van locatie gewisseld. In principe wordt het evenement sinds 2008 in elk jaar waarin Pinksteren vroeg valt\, niet met Pinksteren gehouden\, maar in een ander weekend\, dat in of dichter bij de maand juni ligt. De reden hiervoor is dat Pinksteren anders te ver van andere Europese festivals zou liggen en er dan niet veel bands op tournee zijn in Europa. DESCRIPTION:Oerol is een jaarlijks terugkerend tiendaags cultureel festival in juni\, dat wordt gehouden op het Nederlandse eiland Terschelling. \nDit festival werd in 1981 opgericht door Joop Mulder\, destijds eigenaar van café De Stoep in Midsland. De naam van het Festival is afgeleid van het woord “overal” in Terschellings. Oerol wordt geprogrammeerd aan het begin van de zomer\, als het eiland volop in het groen staat. Heel Terschelling vormt de locatie voor het Festival\, waarbij intensief wordt opgetrokken met Staatsbosbeheer\, een van de partners. Op Oerol is ruimte voor het experiment en jonge makers\, maar er is ook plek voor gevestigde groepen die die in première gaan op Oerol. Ieder jaar komen bezoekers naar de Nederlandse en internationale theatervoorstellingen\, muziek\, Expedities\, Talks en Pop-up Performance tijdens deze tijdelijke maatschappij op een eiland. Although topography and other factors contribute to climatic variation\, tropical locations are typically warm and experience little seasonal change in day-to-day temperature. An important feature of the Tropics is the prevalence of rain in the moist inner regions near the equator\, and that the seasonality of rainfall increases with the distance from the equator. The tropical region faces several challenges such as climate change\, deforestation\, logging\, urbanisation and demographic changes. Tropical nations have made significant progress but face a variety of challenges that demand focused attention across a range of development indicators and data in order to achieve sustainable development. \n\nBy 2050\, the region will host most of the world’s people and two-thirds of its children.\nConsistent with the higher levels of poverty\, more people experience undernourishment in the Tropics than in the rest of the world.\nThe proportion of the urban population living in slum conditions is higher in the Tropics than in the rest of the World.\n\nThe inaugural State of the Tropics Report was launched on 29 June 2014\, as the culmination of a collaboration between twelve leading tropical research institutions. The report offers a unique perspective on this increasingly important region. DESCRIPTION:Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Lat.: “De wiskundige beginselen van de natuurfilosofie”\, kortweg de Principia) is een werk van Isaac Newton gepubliceerd op 5 juli 1687. \nBekend is dat Newton het werk van ruim 500 pagina’s schreef tussen augustus 1684 en april 1686 (minder dan twee jaar dus) naar aanleiding van een bezoek dat Edmond Halley aan hem bracht. Het is echter zeer waarschijnlijk dat hij zijn ideeën erover al eerder ontwikkelde omdat hij tegenover Halley gewag maakte van zijn oplossing voor het probleem van de banen van de planeten (de reden voor Halley’s bezoek). Al in november 1684 zond hij hem en de Royal Society een uitgewerkte wiskundige beschrijving daarvan\, onder de titel De motu corporum in gyrum (Over de beweging van lichamen in een baan)\, een artikel van negen pagina’s. Hierop liet Halley weten dat de Royal Society graag meer van zulk werk zou ontvangen\, en het ook zou uitgeven. Volgens ooggetuigen werkte Newton vervolgens bijna dag en nacht aan het boek. Toen Newton de Principia afgerond had\, had de Royal Society echter net haar hele budget gespendeerd aan de uitgave van De historia piscium\, een boek over vissen\, geschreven door Francis Willughby. Dat boek verkocht zeer slecht\, en uiteindelijk financierde Edmond Halley de eerste druk van de Principia. DESCRIPTION:De Pride Amsterdam is een meerdaags evenement met een homocultureel karakter en wordt sinds 1996 jaarlijks rondom het eerste weekend van augustus gehouden in de binnenstad van Amsterdam. \nLhbtiq+-organisaties in de stad organiseren een maand lang allerlei activiteiten. In 2026 is de Amsterdam Pride van 8 tot en met 29 juli. Hoogtepunt is de Canal Parade\, een bonte stoet van boten die op de eerste zaterdag van augustus door de grachten vaart. De tocht gaat van het Oosterdok\, via de Nieuwe Herengracht\, de Amstel en de Prinsengracht naar het Westerdok. Op 4 november 2022 werd bekendgemaakt dat de WorldPride in 2026 in Amsterdam georganiseerd wordt. De WorldPride werd voor het eerst in 2000 gevierd in Rome en vindt sinds 2012 elke twee à drie jaar plaats. Meer nog dan reguliere Pride-feesten staat de WorldPride garant voor veel bezoekers van over de hele wereld. Dikwijls is het het grootste lgbtiq-evenement van het jaar. De WorldPride in Amsterdam zal tevens de EuroPride van 2026 zijn\, waarmee het voor de derde keer is dat de EuroPride in de hoofdstad gehouden wordt. De WorldPride is met een paar dagen overlap direct ná de Amsterdam Pride: van 25 juli tot en met 8 augustus. SUMMARY:Kwaku Summer Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Het Kwaku Summer Festival (voorheen het Kwakoe Zomerfestival) wordt sinds 1975 bijna elk jaar tijdens een aantal weekeinden in de zomer gehouden in het Nelson Mandelapark in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. \nHet is van origine een Surinaams festival\, maar het heeft zich ontwikkeld tot een multicultureel festival. Het festival is ontstaan in 1975 als voetbaltoernooi\, georganiseerd door Stichting Jongeren Centrum Kwakoe tijdens het 700-jarig bestaan van Amsterdam. Het speelde zich aanvankelijk af op de sportvelden van SV Bijlmer\, op de locatie van het huidige Bijlmerplein in Amsterdam Zuidoost. In 1983 verhuisde het festival naar de huidige locatie in het Nelson Mandelapark dat in die tijd Bijlmerpark heette. Eind jaren negentig dienden zowel het jongerencentrum Kwakoe als de organisatie van het festival een vergunningaanvraag in. De festivalorganisatie Stichting Kwakoe Events onder leiding van Winston Kout kreeg de vergunning toegewezen en heeft het festival sindsdien georganiseerd. Van een louter Surinaams feest\, voor arme Surinamers uit de Bijlmerhoogbouw die geen geld hebben om op vakantie te gaan\, ontwikkelde het festival zich sindsdien tot een multicultureel festival dat zich ook op Antillianen en Afrikanen richt. Very often they are keen specialists on a certain topic which is a natural consequence of their detailed involvement in mostly technical issues. This would be a good reason to embrace oneself and feel proud not only on Embrace your Geekness Day. The definition of the word geek is very close to that of the word nerd or hacker: also persons who like to deal with technology and have therefore only few practises in social interactions. The social behavior of geeks and the communication between two geeks is often incomprehensible for non-geeks. DESCRIPTION:Barbershop Music Appreciation Day takes place on July 13 every year. \nThe best way to join in Barbershop Music Appreciation Day is to go straight into a barbershop and enjoy the music that you can hear inside. In 2005\, “The Sweet Adelines International” have founded this cheery holiday on their 60th anniversary. Barbershop music is a style of a cappella close harmony and vocal harmony\, or unaccompanied vocal music\, characterized by consonant four-part chords for every melody note in a primarily homorhythmic texture. Each of the four parts has its own role: generally\, the lead sings the melody\, the tenor harmonizes above the melody\, the bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes\, and the baritone completes the chord\, usually below the lead. The melody is not usually sung by the tenor or baritone\, except for an infrequent note or two to avoid awkward voice leading\, in tags or codas\, or when some appropriate embellishment can be created. One characteristic feature of barbershop harmony is the use of what is known as “snakes” and “swipes”. This is when a chord is altered by a change in one or more non-melodic voices. Occasional passages may be sung by fewer than four voice parts. Barbershop music is generally performed by either a barbershop quartet\, a group of four singers which sings four-part harmony\, or a barbershop chorus\, which closely resembles a choir with the notable exception of the genre of music. \nAccording to the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS)\, “Barbershop music features songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies\, whose tones clearly define a tonal center and imply major and minor chords and barbershop (dominant and secondary dominant) seventh chords that resolve primarily around the circle of fifths\, while making frequent use of other resolutions.” Slower barbershop songs\, especially ballads\, often eschew a continuous beat\, and notes are often held (or sped up) ad libitum. Aside from the bass\, the voice parts in barbershop singing do not correspond closely to their classical music counterparts; the tenor range and tessitura are similar to those of the classical countertenor (including the fact that they sing their highest notes primarily in falsetto\, as a countertenor would)\, the baritone resembles a high lyric baritone in range and a tenor in tessitura\, and the lead generally corresponds to the tenor of classical repertoire\, with some singers possessing a tessitura more similar to that of a high baritone.
