DESCRIPTION:Het International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is het grootste filmfestival van Nederland\, het wordt sinds 1972 jaarlijks in Rotterdam gehouden. \nSinds 2017 worden films getoond in Pathé Schouwburgplein\, Kino\, Cinerama\, LantarenVenster\, het Oude Luxor\, de Schouwburg\, De Doelen en Worm. Elk jaar gaat eind januari in Rotterdam het gros van de films in première die gedurende de rest van het jaar in Nederland te zien zullen zijn. Ook zijn er vele korte en lange films uit alle delen van de wereld te zien die buiten het festival niet meer in Nederland vertoond worden. Centraal staan de kleinere\, onafhankelijke en artistieke films van vaak weinig bekende regisseurs\, alhoewel de ‘betere’ Hollywoodfilm niet geschuwd wordt. Er zijn programmaonderdelen rond producties die zijn gefinancierd door het Hubert Bals Fonds\, retrospectieven van de ‘Filmmakers in Focus’\, forumdiscussies\, tentoonstellingen van videokunst\, enzovoort. Daarnaast is er tijdens het festival de CineMart waar filmmakers in contact kunnen komen met financiers. Dit betekent dat IDFA films selecteert die de standpunten van de filmmaker op een creatieve en filmische manier reflecteren. IDFA zoekt documentaires die filmisch gezien belangwekkend of vernieuwend zijn\, die relevant zijn voor de huidige maatschappij en die de kijker ertoe brengen na te denken\, te discussiëren en vragen te stellen. Jaarlijks worden ruim 250 creatieve documentaires vertoond. Naast het festival bestaat IDFA uit het IDFA Bertha Fund\, de markten het IDFA Forum\, Docs for Sale en IDFAcademy. Het IDFA Bertha Fund steunt documentaireprojecten en festivals in ontwikkelingslanden. IDFA Forum is de grootste Europese cofinancieringsmarkt voor documentaireproducties. SUMMARY:2025 Edition Palestinian Film Festival Amsterdam
DESCRIPTION:As a signpost in place and a source point of time\, Gaza is a turning point globally\, and it is also a marker of the long-felt conditions of virtuality that have in part defined Palestinian experience since the 1948 Al Nakba [the catastrophe] when the mass displacement\, dispossession\, and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by the Israeli state began. \nWith the abundance of dystopian and apocalyptic images saturating viewers’ senses for two years by the time we gather in October\, Virtual Remains opens up the question: how do we as receivers of this image stream inhabit imaginaries of Gaza and of Palestine\, and how do they\, as locus and ethos\, inhabit us? Starting here\, the 2025 festival is a reflection on virtuality in all its dimensions: as representation\, imagination\, index\, projection\, embodiment\, and the truth claims attached to (moving) images. This year’s festival will once again unfold over four days\, beginning with an opening night premiere on Thursday\, 9 October and continuing with day and evening activities throughout the weekend. Alongside our rich schedule of screenings featuring over twenty-five films by Palestinian directors with special introductions and post-screening discussions\, the 2025 programme also comprises a range of parallel events\, including a series of dialogue sessions and hands-on workshops\, as well as our always popular olive oil tasting and a very special interactive keynote. To realise the programme\, we are pleased to be continuing our collaborations with the arthouse theaters Kriterion\, Lab111\, Studio/K\, and Ventilator Cinema\, and to be embarking on new partnerships with the arts organisations De Appel and Framer Framed\, and the collective dance studio Jakoozi. DESCRIPTION:The hobbits are described as being of three types\, Harfoots\, Fallohides\, and Stoors\, all deriving from a region to the east of the Shire\, in particular the Angle between two rivers\, and migrating to the Shire at different times.\nTolkien Week is observed as the calendar week\, starting on Sunday\, containing September 22\, which is always observed as Hobbit Day. \nBoth celebrations began in 1978. Hobbit Day in particular\, and Tolkien Week as well\, have gained some measure of legal dignity through a variety of proclamations\, declarations\, tributes and similar governmental documents prepared by elected officials who support the Society\, its goals and the observance of these holidays. Both events have attracted bipartisan support\, from the county courthouse to the White House and U.S. Capitol. Tolkien Week honors J. R. R. Tolkien and his son and editor\, Christopher J.R. Tolkien\, and celebrates the Middle-earth cycle: The Silmarillion\, The Hobbit\, The Lord of the Rings (The Fellowship of the Ring\, The Two Towers\, The Return of the King)\, Unfinished Tales\, and The History of Middle-earth. \nHobbit Day and Tolkien Week fall during the “Back to School” season and can create a bright new interest for students in literature classes and libraries. A number of schools and libraries host seminars and art shows during the week. Those with the facilities and budget sometimes arrange for a showing of one or more of the motion pictures based on the works. A few have even presented marathon showings of the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings films! \nThe most popular method of observing Tolkien Week is the library\, bookstore or school display.  Most libraries have bulletin boards or cases\, and some have enclosed display tables and other facilities up to and including display windows of considerable size. Many librarians among our members and friends create displays; other members contact their libraries and assist in preparing displays. The same is certainly true of schools. Tolkien Week displays and seminars have been held in places ranging from distinguished universities to libraries located in prisons\, mental institutions\, and army bases.  If your activities include presentation of research papers or other materials suitable for publication\, please consider submitting the available works to the Society for possible publication in Minas Tirith Evening-Star: Journal of the American Tolkien Society. \nHobbit Day\, on the other hand\, is scheduled to fall on the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins – two fictional characters in J. R. R. Tolkien’s popular set of books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings –  mutual birthday\, the date of the Long Awaited Party (translated in text by Tolkien as September 22).  This is perhaps the oldest festal observance associated with Tolkien fandom.  Celebration actually predates the formal designation of the holiday. A variety of names have been applied to the date and the celebrations. In large part\, Hobbit Day is usually taken up with the fun activities – the feasts\, games\, costume events\, fireworks and the like. Hobbit Day is a virtually ideal holiday\, incorporating attractive elements of several others: the masquerade fun of Halloween\, the feast of Thanksgiving\, the exchange of greeting cards and gifts associated with Christmas and birthdays\, the picnic atmosphere of Labor Day and Memorial Day\, the fireworks of Independence Day (or Guy Fawkes Day)… and the study and reflection associated with many commemorative days throughout the year. \nAccording to the fictional setting\, Bilbo was born in the year of 2890 and Frodo in the year of 2968 in the Third Age (1290 and 1368 respectively in Shire-Reckoning.) Tolkien Week is the week containing Hobbit Day. The Fellowship of the Ring opened with a celebration of Bilbo’s birthday. It was a large party with food\, fireworks\, dancing and much merriment. Some Tolkien fans celebrate by emulating the hobbits’ parties. Other simply go barefoot in honour of the hobbits\, who don’t wear shoes. Some schools and libraries use this as an opportunity to pique interest in Tolkien’s work by putting up displays and hosting events. The Lord of the Rings: “There is no record of the Shire-folk commemorating either March 25 or September 22; but in the Westfarthing\, especially in the country round Hobbiton Hill\, there grew a custom of making holiday and dancing in the Party Field\, when weather permitted\, on April 6.” In Gondor\, however\, “in honour of Frodo Yavannie 30\, which corresponded to the former September 22\, his birthday\, was made a festival\, and the leap-year was provided for by doubling this feast\, called Cormare or Ringday.” \nLinks:\nHobbit Day and Tolkien Week

The day often meant a day off from school for Federation youth. (VOY episode: “Homestead”\, ST website: Startrek.com). In 2381\, Admiral Leonard James Akaar planned to have the USS Titan relaunched on First Contact Day\, as part of a morale-boosting effort following the Borg Invasion earlier that year. (TNG novel: Losing the Peace). First Contact Day was a holiday celebrated to honor both the warp 1 flight of the Phoenix and first open contact between Humans and Vulcans (Star Trek: First Contact). On Earth\, children were given a day off from school\, a fact that Captain Kathryn Janeway remembered was really the only way it was celebrated. \nNaomi Wildman and Neelix planned the 315th observation of the event aboard the USS Voyager. The festivities included Zefram Cochrane’s favorite food\, cheese pierogies\, and rock and roll music on Tom Paris’s jukebox. At Neelix’s insistence\, Tuvok gave the Vulcan salute while reciting the greeting given by the Vulcans during first contact: “Live long and prosper.” He did not see the point of it\, but everyone in attendance applauded. SUMMARY:International Film Festival Rotterdam 2025
DESCRIPTION:Het International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is het grootste filmfestival van Nederland\, het wordt sinds 1972 jaarlijks in Rotterdam gehouden. \nSinds 2017 worden films getoond in Pathé Schouwburgplein\, Kino\, Cinerama\, LantarenVenster\, het Oude Luxor\, de Schouwburg\, De Doelen en Worm. Elk jaar gaat eind januari in Rotterdam het gros van de films in première die gedurende de rest van het jaar in Nederland te zien zullen zijn. Ook zijn er vele korte en lange films uit alle delen van de wereld te zien die buiten het festival niet meer in Nederland vertoond worden. Centraal staan de kleinere\, onafhankelijke en artistieke films van vaak weinig bekende regisseurs\, alhoewel de ‘betere’ Hollywoodfilm niet geschuwd wordt. Er zijn programmaonderdelen rond producties die zijn gefinancierd door het Hubert Bals Fonds\, retrospectieven van de ‘Filmmakers in Focus’\, forumdiscussies\, tentoonstellingen van videokunst\, enzovoort. Daarnaast is er tijdens het festival de CineMart waar filmmakers in contact kunnen komen met financiers. Tot slot worden jaarlijks drie HIVOS Tiger Awards uitgereikt. Naast een aantal vaste medewerkers wordt het IFFR elk jaar ondersteund door een kleine duizend vrijwilligers\, die in ruil gratis films mogen bezoeken en enkele privileges krijgen. \nLinks:\nIFFR
