DESCRIPTION:First Contact Day is a holiday celebrated in the Federation on April 5\, marking the anniversaries of the flight of the Phoenix and of first contact between Humans and Vulcans on April 5th\, 2063 in Bozeman\, Montana. \nThe holiday also shares the same date as the Day of Honor in the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Republic’s Republic Day. While not a major holiday\, Naomi Wildman and Neelix planned an elaborate celebration aboard the USS Voyager in 2377\, including cheese pierogies\, rock and roll music\, and a reenactment of the historic first contact by Lieutenant Commander Tuvok. The day often meant a day off from school for Federation youth. (VOY episode: “Homestead”\, ST website: Startrek.com). In 2381\, Admiral Leonard James Akaar planned to have the USS Titan relaunched on First Contact Day\, as part of a morale-boosting effort following the Borg Invasion earlier that year. (TNG novel: Losing the Peace). First Contact Day was a holiday celebrated to honor both the warp 1 flight of the Phoenix and first open contact between Humans and Vulcans (Star Trek: First Contact). On Earth\, children were given a day off from school\, a fact that Captain Kathryn Janeway remembered was really the only way it was celebrated. \nNaomi Wildman and Neelix planned the 315th observation of the event aboard the USS Voyager. The festivities included Zefram Cochrane’s favorite food\, cheese pierogies\, and rock and roll music on Tom Paris’s jukebox. At Neelix’s insistence\, Tuvok gave the Vulcan salute while reciting the greeting given by the Vulcans during first contact: “Live long and prosper.” He did not see the point of it\, but everyone in attendance applauded. (VOY: “Homestead”). Star Trek: First Contact co-writer Ronald D. Moore chose the date for first contact in honor of his son\, Jonathan\, whose birthday is April 5th. First Contact Day was also cited in the first draft of the script for ENT: “Fusion” (which had the working title “Equilibrium”). DESCRIPTION:The Health for All Film Festival (HAFF) has its online awards ceremony every year between May and June. \nIt is an opportunity to meet the winners and converse with the film producers\, the HAFF jury\, and global health experts. This dialogue continues throughout the years with more precise panel discussions recorded and available for health promotion and health education activities. In-person screenings of some of our winning and selected films have been organized by various World Health Organization (WHO) Offices and by several of the WHO HAFF institutional partners from a growing network. These events represent additional opportunities for this educational dialogue between filmmakers and health experts\, building up our global movement for positive behavior changes through films. In April and May 2024\, HAFF releases its new official selection published on WHO’s YouTube channel. The HAFF website presents the list of selected titles for each category of the competition with some keywords to ease your choice of films to watch. This strategic timing allows you all to actively engage with the shortlisted films. You are encouraged to view and comment on your favourite films and to champion them on social media using the hashtag #Film4Health. \nWHO hopes that numerous people will spread the word about this opportunity to interact with health stories. About 60 shortlisted films are available on WHO’s YouTube channel in four playlists\, as per the competition categories: Universal Health Coverage (UHC) – Emergencies\, Migrants and Refugees Health – Better Health and Physical Activity – Very Short Films. In parallel to the online access for the wide public\, the international jury will review this shortlist and recommend winners to the WHO Director-General\, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. This year\, the distinguished jury is composed of senior WHO experts collaborating with renowned artists like Sharon Stone\, Alfonso Herrera\, Nandita Das and more. DESCRIPTION:Mobilizing for Monuments\, a coalition of more than 80 businesses working to protect outdoor spaces through the designation of national monuments\, debuts its short film\, Mobilizing for Monuments Road Trip.\n\nThe film follows The Conservation Alliance\, Flickr\, Rivian and Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project on a week-long road trip (November 7-13\, 2023) from Colorado to California to share the stories of local business leaders\, elected officials\, on-the-ground champions\, community members\, and recreationalists advocating for the protection of public lands in their backyards. The stories underscore the importance of national monuments for the environment and economy\, and calls on the Biden Administration to protect three million acres of land in Colorado and California. The road trip included five recently designated or proposed national monuments: \n\nProposed Dolores River Canyon Country National Monument and National Conservation Area in Colorado\nBaaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni-Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument in Arizona\nAvi Kwa Ame National Monument in Nevada\nProposed Chuckwalla National Monument in California\nProposed expansion of San Gabriel Mountains National Monument in California\n\nThroughout the 1\,500 mile journey – enabled by Rivian’s R1T and R1S all-electric adventure vehicles – participants engaged in meaningful conversations with local community members\, explored iconic landscapes\, and advocated for the designation and expansion of new monuments. Through the compelling visuals and authentic storytelling\, the film aims to inspire an appreciation for our public lands\, as well as action in support of the $1.1 trillion dollar outdoor recreation industry.
