SUMMARY:Save the Observatory Science Centre Herstmonceux - petition
DESCRIPTION:The Observatory Science Centre is an educational charity which has called the Grade II listed\, former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux\, East Sussex\, home for the last 30 years. \nThe Canadian landlords\, Queen’s University\, who also own Herstmonceux Castle\, are not renewing the Science Centre’s lease\, so come the end of the 2026 season the Science Centre will be homeless. Over the years the science centre have worked tirelessly to fund and restore the site and the telescopes back to their former glory. The centre is a major venue for exhibitions\, lectures and educational programmes. The renovated telescopes provide a unique setting for the general public\, schools\, colleges\, and brownie and scout groups to learn about science\, space and the world around them. Whilst the Science Centre is in search for a new site to continue operations beyond 2026\, they should not have to leave the Observatory site at all and the historic site should be preserved for future generations as a great educational tool of significant historical importance. Kirk (William Shatner)\, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and their crewmates as they explored the galaxy on the starship USS Enterprise. Star Trek is an American science fiction media franchise created by Gene Roddenberry\, which began with the eponymous 1960s television series and became a worldwide pop-culture phenomenon. The franchise has expanded into various films\, television series\, video games\, novels\, and comic books\, becoming one of the most recognizable and highest-grossing media franchises of all time. The franchise began with Star Trek: The Original Series\, which debuted in the US on September 8\, 1966\, and aired for three seasons on NBC. It was first broadcast on September 6\, 1966\, on Canada’s CTV network. It followed the voyages of the crew of the USS Enterprise\, a space exploration vessel built by the United Federation of Planets in the 23rd century\, on a mission “to explore strange new worlds\, to seek out new life and new civilizations\, to boldly go where no man has gone before”. In creating Star Trek\, Roddenberry was inspired by C. S. DESCRIPTION:April is in 2026 al 25 jaar de Maand van de Filosofie! \nJaarlijks worden in april door heel Nederland en Vlaanderen filosofische nachten\, programma’s\, lezingen\, debatten en festivals georganiseerd rondom het thema van de Maand van de Filosofie. Het thema van 2026 is ‘Ken onszelve’. Elk jaar verschijnt er een nieuw filosofisch essay\, wordt de Socratesbeker uitgereikt aan het beste filosofieboek van het jaar en eens in de twee jaar wordt een nieuwe Denker des Vaderlands uitgeroepen. De filosofie of wijsbegeerte is de oudste theoretische discipline die het verlangen en het streven uitdrukt naar kennis en wijsheid. Zij kwam voor het eerst echt op in de 6e eeuw voor de Gregoriaanse jaartelling. Een beoefenaar van de filosofie wordt een filosoof of wijsgeer genoemd. In het dagelijks spraakgebruik wordt de term filosofie gebruikt om elke vorm van wijsheid of levensbeschouwing aan te duiden (zoals in “iemands filosofie”) of iemands uitgangspunten (zoals in “het sluit niet aan op de filosofie achter dit plan”). DESCRIPTION:Wereldboekendag (ook bekend als Internationale dag van het boek en de auteursrechten\, en alternatief geschreven als Wereld Boeken Dag) is een evenement dat jaarlijks op 23 april wordt gehouden door UNESCO ter promotie van lezen\, publicatie en auteursrechten. De dag werd voor het eerst gehouden in 1995. \nDe datum 23 april werd gekozen omdat deze dag in Spanje al sinds 1923 in het teken stond van boeken. Op die dag werd de schrijver Miguel de Cervantes geëerd. Dit werd later ook opgenomen in de Spaanse viering van Sint Jorisdag (eveneens op 23 april). In Catalonie wordt deze dag sinds 1456 gevierd als Diada de Sant Jordi en schenkt men traditiegetrouw aan goede vrienden en geliefden een boek en een roos. Een andere reden om 23 april als datum te kiezen was omdat dit de sterfdag was van William Shakespeare\, Garcilaso de la Vega en Josep Pla. Alleen het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Ierland hanteren een andere datum voor wereldboekendag\, namelijk de eerste donderdag in maart. Dit omdat 23 april nog weleens wil samenvallen met Pasen en de bijbehorende schoolvakanties. Wereldboekendag wordt inmiddels in meer dan 100 landen gevierd\, waarbij elk land zijn eigen activiteiten organiseert. SUMMARY:Pavel Krisevich: Russian Prison Art [postponed thanks to Dutch authorities]
DESCRIPTION:Artist Pavel Krisevich was held in Russia’s prison system for 3\,5 years after staging performance art in support of political prisoners in Russia. Last year\, Krisevich was released and will now speak at De Balie. \nThe performance art of Pavel Krisevich is as spectacular as it is fearless. He tied himself to a large cross like a Jesus figure in front of the headquarters of the FSB\, Russia’s secret service\, with a burning bonfire of files of political prisoners beneath him. In 2021\, Krisevich staged a suicide on Red Square in Moscow to draw attention to the abominable situation of political prisoners in Russia. It earned him a five-year prison sentence. From his cell\, Krisevich bravely continued making art; using his own blood as material\, he portrayed the bleak life in prison. Work from this series was previously shown at De Balie during the exhibition Artists Against the Kremlin. At De Balie\, Krisevich will speak about the power of art as resistance against an all-dominating system. He is joined by journalist Paul Alexander\, whose new book ‘Bloed\, as en tandpasta’ portrays the life of political prisoners in Russia’s penal system through Krisevich’s prison art. How does the current prison system resemble the Soviet Camps? And what drives the political prisoners in their virtually hopeless struggle against an all-powerful regime? \nDe Balie regrets having to cancel this program. The Dutch authorities are currently unwilling to grant Pavel Krisevich a visa\, due to concerns that he might apply for asylum. De Balie strongly protests the Dutch government’s refusal to grant a temporary visa to an artist.
