SUMMARY:Save the Observatory Science Centre Herstmonceux - petition
DESCRIPTION:The Observatory Science Centre is an educational charity which has called the Grade II listed\, former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux\, East Sussex\, home for the last 30 years. \nThe Canadian landlords\, Queen’s University\, who also own Herstmonceux Castle\, are not renewing the Science Centre’s lease\, so come the end of the 2026 season the Science Centre will be homeless. Over the years the science centre have worked tirelessly to fund and restore the site and the telescopes back to their former glory. The centre is a major venue for exhibitions\, lectures and educational programmes. The renovated telescopes provide a unique setting for the general public\, schools\, colleges\, and brownie and scout groups to learn about science\, space and the world around them. Whilst the Science Centre is in search for a new site to continue operations beyond 2026\, they should not have to leave the Observatory site at all and the historic site should be preserved for future generations as a great educational tool of significant historical importance. Please sign this petition for someone to step in and prevent the Science Centre from having to leave the Observatory site. \nLinks:\nSave the Observatory Science Centre Herstmonceux \nHerstmonceux Observatory Campaign Group

SUMMARY:Star Trek 60th Year
DESCRIPTION:The year of 2026 marks a historic chapter for Star Trek as the legendary franchise will celebrate its 60th anniversary on Star Trek Day on Sept. 8\, 2026. \nThe 60th celebrations will begin in January 2026\, featuring notable partnerships\, new launches and memorable moments throughout the year. On September 8\, 1966\, Star Trek debuted for the first time on television with “The Man Trap\,” the pilot episode of “Star Trek: The Original Series“\, introducing the world to Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner)\, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and their crewmates as they explored the galaxy on the starship USS Enterprise. Star Trek is an American science fiction media franchise created by Gene Roddenberry\, which began with the eponymous 1960s television series and became a worldwide pop-culture phenomenon. The franchise has expanded into various films\, television series\, video games\, novels\, and comic books\, becoming one of the most recognizable and highest-grossing media franchises of all time. The franchise began with Star Trek: The Original Series\, which debuted in the US on September 8\, 1966\, and aired for three seasons on NBC. It was first broadcast on September 6\, 1966\, on Canada’s CTV network. It followed the voyages of the crew of the USS Enterprise\, a space exploration vessel built by the United Federation of Planets in the 23rd century\, on a mission “to explore strange new worlds\, to seek out new life and new civilizations\, to boldly go where no man has gone before”. In creating Star Trek\, Roddenberry was inspired by C. S. Forester‘s Horatio Hornblower series of novels\, Jonathan Swift‘s 1726 novel Gulliver’s Travels\, the 1956 film Forbidden Planet\, and television westerns such as Wagon Train. \nLinks:\nStar Trek Boldly Goes into its 60th Year with Fan-Centric Anniversary Celebrations Throughout 2026

SUMMARY:Reggae Month 2026
DESCRIPTION:Reggae Month is an annual celebration in Jamaica held every February to honor the island’s musical heritage. \nParticularly reggae’s roots in cultural identity\, social resistance\, and community unity. The ‘Rhythm and Resilience’ theme isn’t just symbolic. It reflects how Jamaica’s creative community has risen in the face of real adversity. In the aftermath of challenges like Hurricane Melissa\, music across the island has become a source of emotional healing\, community connection\, and economic revival\, from benefit concerts to songs celebrating unity and rebuilding. For 2026\, the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) has chosen the theme “Rhythms of Resilience.” This was especially shaped by the impact of Hurricane Melissa\, a storm that recently hit Jamaica hard. Affecting communities\, livelihoods\, and the cultural ecosystem. The theme reflects how the music and rhythms of Jamaica have helped the nation cope\, heal\, and push forward after adversity. It underscores reggae’s role not just as entertainment but as cultural strength and emotional sustenance for the people. The official month was first declared by the Jamaican government in 2008\, and its timing aligns with the birthdays of reggae icons Dennis Brown (Feb 1) and Bob Marley (Feb 6). \nLinks:\nReggae Month 2026

SUMMARY:#VrijdagDeDertiende / Vrijdag de 13e / Friday the 13th

SUMMARY:#WorldRadioDay 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Radio Day is an observance day held annually on 13 February to celebrate radio as a medium. It was proclaimed on 3 November 2011 by UNESCO’s 36th General Conference after originally being proposed by the Kingdom of Spain. \nFollowing a request from the Spanish Radio Academy on 20 September 2010\, Spain proposed that the UNESCO Executive Board include an agenda item on the proclamation of a World Radio Day. UNESCO’s Executive Board approved the agenda item in its provisional agenda for the proclamation of a “World Radio Day” on 29 September 2011. UNESCO carried out a wide consultation in 2011 with diverse stakeholders\, such as broadcasting associations\, UN agencies\, funds and programmes\, relevant NGOs\, foundations and bilateral development agencies\, as well as UNESCO Permanent Delegations and National Commissions for UNESCO. Among the answers\, 91% were in favour of the project\, including official support from the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU)\, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU)\, the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB)\, the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU)\, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)\, the International Association of Broadcasting (IAB)\, the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA)\, the Organización de Telecomunicaciones Ibeoramericanas (OTI)\, BBC\, URTI\, Vatican Radio\, etc. The results of this consultation are available in UNESCO’s document 187 EX/13. The Board recommended to the UNESCO 36th session of the General Conference that it proclaim a World Radio Day at its 36th session\, and that this day be celebrated by UNESCO on 13 February\, the anniversary of the day that the United Nations established the United Nations Radio in 1946. \nIt also invited all United Nations Member States\, organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations\, professional associations and broadcasting unions\, as well as civil society\, including non-governmental organizations and individuals\, to duly celebrate World Radio Day\, in the way that each considers most adequate. The board further requested that UNESCO’s Director-General bring the resolution to the attention of the Secretary-General of the United Nations\, so that World Radio Day could be endorsed by the General Assembly and celebrated by the whole system. The matter was subsequently treated by UNESCO’s General Conference\, which adopted resolution contained in the file 36 C/63. World Radio Day was thus unanimously proclaimed by all Member States of UNESCO in November 2011. In December 2012\, The General Assembly of the UN endorsed the proclamation of World Radio Day\, thereby becoming a day to be celebrated by all UN agencies\, funds and programmes and their partners. File A/RES/67/124. Various radio industry bodies around the world are supporting the initiative by encouraging stations in developed countries to assist those in the developing world. At UNESCO\, the consultation\, proclamation and celebrations were handled by Mirta Lourenco\, Chief of the Sector for Media Development. \nOn World Radio Day 2026\, UNESCO gives radio stations the resources to build confidence in how Artifical Intelligence (AI) is used\, all while preserving the warmth and reliability that audiences cherish. Today AI opens a new chapter: not just for innovation but for deepening their bond with listeners. AI isn’t just a challenge to navigate; it’s a chance to reimagine radio with care\, creativity\, and connection. It invites us to dream bigger\, reach further\, and honour listeners’ time\, intelligence and expectations. \nLinks:\nWorld Radio Day \nRadio: A century informing\, entertaining and educating \nITU prefix \nWhy We Need “Shortwave 2.0” \nRadioomroep weblinks
