SUMMARY:Save the Observatory Science Centre Herstmonceux - petition
DESCRIPTION:The Observatory Science Centre is an educational charity which has called the Grade II listed\, former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux\, East Sussex\, home for the last 30 years. \nThe Canadian landlords\, Queen’s University\, who also own Herstmonceux Castle\, are not renewing the Science Centre’s lease\, so come the end of the 2026 season the Science Centre will be homeless. Over the years the science centre have worked tirelessly to fund and restore the site and the telescopes back to their former glory. The centre is a major venue for exhibitions\, lectures and educational programmes. The renovated telescopes provide a unique setting for the general public\, schools\, colleges\, and brownie and scout groups to learn about science\, space and the world around them. Whilst the Science Centre is in search for a new site to continue operations beyond 2026\, they should not have to leave the Observatory site at all and the historic site should be preserved for future generations as a great educational tool of significant historical importance. DESCRIPTION:Het Amsterdam Light Festival (ALF) is een sinds 2012 jaarlijks terugkerend lichtfestival in de binnenstad van Amsterdam en vindt plaats rond de jaarwisseling\, in de maanden december en januari. \nGedurende de festivalperiode zijn specifiek voor de gelegenheid ontworpen lichtkunstwerken en -installaties van hedendaagse (internationale) kunstenaars\, designers en architecten tentoongesteld in de stad. Elk jaar heeft het Amsterdam Light Festival een ander thema. Editie 14 gaat over nalatenschap (Legacy). Zowel in het groot als in het klein. Want Legacy gaat over grootse historische en klimatologische gebeurtenissen die hun invloed lang doen gelden\, maar ook over het voortbestaan van familietradities en gedeelde herinneringen en gewoonten.​ \nWelk sporen laten we achter?\nWelke verhalen vertellen we door?\nHoe willen we herinnerd worden?​ \nTwintig kunstenaars van over heel de wereld gingen aan de slag met deze vragen. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nDe Kerstpuzzel van Dr. Denker in het Dagblad van het Noorden bestaat uit veertig kleine rebussen of beeldcrypto’s met een eigen oplossing. \nHet aantal letters van elk oplossingswoord wordt aangegeven. Van groot belang is de stand of positie van de getekende letters en woorden\, maar soms ook de vorm en afwijkende achtergrondkleur. Bij veel plaatjes staat zoiets als ‘K=T’\, wat betekent dat het plaatje iets voorstelt waar een K in voorkomt\, en die letter moet worden veranderd in een T om de oplossing te vinden. Datzelfde kan echter ook met een voorwerp worden uitgebeeld: er staat een kist op het plaatje en dat moet worden geïnterpreteerd als ‘K=T’. Staat er ‘–M’\, dan moet de letter M uit het afgebeelde voorwerp verwijderd worden. De lettercombinatie ‘DMV’ kan geïnterpreteerd worden als ‘M in DV’ maar evengoed als ‘–DV’. Tot 1994 waren het zwart-wit plaatjes die met de hand waren getekend. De oplossingen sluiten aan bij het jaarlijks wisselende puzzelthema. In een introductietekst worden allerlei aanwijzingen over het thema gegeven. Vast grapje in elke kerstpuzzel is een opgave met een opgedirkte schaars geklede dame die staat voor ‘snol’\, ‘slet’\, ‘hoer’ of ‘del’. Vaak ook is er in een van de plaatjes een verborgen verwijzing te vinden naar de oplossing van een ander plaatje. Een vast Dr. Denker testpanel\, bestaande uit redactieleden van de krant\, buigt zich voor het verschijnen over de moeilijkheidsgraad van de puzzels. De puzzels van Dr. Denker moeten uitdagend zijn voor iedereen\, de ‘denk-beelden’ variëren van eenvoudig tot zeer lastig. \nLinks:\nOudejaarsavond\, jaarwisseling en nieuwjaarsdag 2025 / 2026

DESCRIPTION:The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures are a series of lectures on a single scientific topic each\, which have been held at the Royal Institution in London each year. \nThe lectures present subjects to a general audience\, including young people\, in an informative and entertaining manner. Michael Faraday conceived and initiated the Christmas Lecture series in 1825\, at a time when organised education for young people was scarce. Many of the Christmas Lectures were published. On the 200-year anniversary of the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures\, the 2025 Lectures will see leading space scientist Dame Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock take audiences on an epic voyage through time and space. Joined by a host of very special guests – from astronauts to history-making astronomers – Maggie will explore the extraordinary breakthroughs that have revolutionised our understanding of the universe\, enabling us to see ever further into space\, and ever further back in time. Maggie helped develop the James Webb Telescope\, the most powerful space telescope ever created – which launched on Christmas day 2021 before travelling a million miles to begin its orbit of the sun. Unpacking James Webb’s latest breathtaking images\, Maggie will reveal how this “time-travelling” telescope is now rewriting the story of the Big Bang and allowing us to witness the birth of the first stars and galaxies that followed. \nAs NASA prepares to return humans to the moon for the first time since 1972\, Maggie will investigate how manned spaceflight has transformed our relationship with our nearest neighbour – and with our home planet. And\, delving further back in time\, she’ll explore how the night sky has always held a fascination for humanity – investigating what the moon and stars meant to ancient societies across the world. Maggie will also explain how the latest space technologies – from probes and orbiters to the most recent Mars rovers – are shedding astonishing new light on the planets in our solar system.
