SUMMARY:Save the Observatory Science Centre Herstmonceux - petition
DESCRIPTION:The Observatory Science Centre is an educational charity which has called the Grade II listed\, former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux\, East Sussex\, home for the last 30 years. \nThe Canadian landlords\, Queen’s University\, who also own Herstmonceux Castle\, are not renewing the Science Centre’s lease\, so come the end of the 2026 season the Science Centre will be homeless. Over the years the science centre have worked tirelessly to fund and restore the site and the telescopes back to their former glory. The centre is a major venue for exhibitions\, lectures and educational programmes. The renovated telescopes provide a unique setting for the general public\, schools\, colleges\, and brownie and scout groups to learn about science\, space and the world around them. Whilst the Science Centre is in search for a new site to continue operations beyond 2026\, they should not have to leave the Observatory site at all and the historic site should be preserved for future generations as a great educational tool of significant historical importance. DESCRIPTION:Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Lat.: “De wiskundige beginselen van de natuurfilosofie”\, kortweg de Principia) is een werk van Isaac Newton gepubliceerd op 5 juli 1687. \nBekend is dat Newton het werk van ruim 500 pagina’s schreef tussen augustus 1684 en april 1686 (minder dan twee jaar dus) naar aanleiding van een bezoek dat Edmond Halley aan hem bracht. Het is echter zeer waarschijnlijk dat hij zijn ideeën erover al eerder ontwikkelde omdat hij tegenover Halley gewag maakte van zijn oplossing voor het probleem van de banen van de planeten (de reden voor Halley’s bezoek). Al in november 1684 zond hij hem en de Royal Society een uitgewerkte wiskundige beschrijving daarvan\, onder de titel De motu corporum in gyrum (Over de beweging van lichamen in een baan)\, een artikel van negen pagina’s. Hierop liet Halley weten dat de Royal Society graag meer van zulk werk zou ontvangen\, en het ook zou uitgeven. Volgens ooggetuigen werkte Newton vervolgens bijna dag en nacht aan het boek. Toen Newton de Principia afgerond had\, had de Royal Society echter net haar hele budget gespendeerd aan de uitgave van De historia piscium\, een boek over vissen\, geschreven door Francis Willughby. Dat boek verkocht zeer slecht\, en uiteindelijk financierde Edmond Halley de eerste druk van de Principia. In 2026 is de Amsterdam Pride van 8 tot en met 29 juli. Hoogtepunt is de Canal Parade\, een bonte stoet van boten die op de eerste zaterdag van augustus door de grachten vaart. De tocht gaat van het Oosterdok\, via de Nieuwe Herengracht\, de Amstel en de Prinsengracht naar het Westerdok. Op 4 november 2022 werd bekendgemaakt dat de WorldPride in 2026 in Amsterdam georganiseerd wordt. De WorldPride werd voor het eerst in 2000 gevierd in Rome en vindt sinds 2012 elke twee à drie jaar plaats. Meer nog dan reguliere Pride-feesten staat de WorldPride garant voor veel bezoekers van over de hele wereld. Dikwijls is het het grootste lgbtiq-evenement van het jaar. De WorldPride in Amsterdam zal tevens de EuroPride van 2026 zijn\, waarmee het voor de derde keer is dat de EuroPride in de hoofdstad gehouden wordt. De WorldPride is met een paar dagen overlap direct ná de Amsterdam Pride: van 25 juli tot en met 8 augustus. SUMMARY:Kwaku Summer Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Het Kwaku Summer Festival (voorheen het Kwakoe Zomerfestival) wordt sinds 1975 bijna elk jaar tijdens een aantal weekeinden in de zomer gehouden in het Nelson Mandelapark in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. \nHet is van origine een Surinaams festival\, maar het heeft zich ontwikkeld tot een multicultureel festival. Het festival is ontstaan in 1975 als voetbaltoernooi\, georganiseerd door Stichting Jongeren Centrum Kwakoe tijdens het 700-jarig bestaan van Amsterdam. Het speelde zich aanvankelijk af op de sportvelden van SV Bijlmer\, op de locatie van het huidige Bijlmerplein in Amsterdam Zuidoost. In 1983 verhuisde het festival naar de huidige locatie in het Nelson Mandelapark dat in die tijd Bijlmerpark heette. Eind jaren negentig dienden zowel het jongerencentrum Kwakoe als de organisatie van het festival een vergunningaanvraag in. De festivalorganisatie Stichting Kwakoe Events onder leiding van Winston Kout kreeg de vergunning toegewezen en heeft het festival sindsdien georganiseerd. Van een louter Surinaams feest\, voor arme Surinamers uit de Bijlmerhoogbouw die geen geld hebben om op vakantie te gaan\, ontwikkelde het festival zich sindsdien tot een multicultureel festival dat zich ook op Antillianen en Afrikanen richt. People who get very much into something and mostly if it’s from the IT sector are often called geeks. Above all Embrace your Geekness Day emphasizes the positive features of geeks. Very often they are keen specialists on a certain topic which is a natural consequence of their detailed involvement in mostly technical issues. This would be a good reason to embrace oneself and feel proud not only on Embrace your Geekness Day. The definition of the word geek is very close to that of the word nerd or hacker: also persons who like to deal with technology and have therefore only few practises in social interactions. The social behavior of geeks and the communication between two geeks is often incomprehensible for non-geeks. DESCRIPTION:Barbershop Music Appreciation Day takes place on July 13 every year. \nThe best way to join in Barbershop Music Appreciation Day is to go straight into a barbershop and enjoy the music that you can hear inside. In 2005\, “The Sweet Adelines International” have founded this cheery holiday on their 60th anniversary. Barbershop music is a style of a cappella close harmony and vocal harmony\, or unaccompanied vocal music\, characterized by consonant four-part chords for every melody note in a primarily homorhythmic texture. Each of the four parts has its own role: generally\, the lead sings the melody\, the tenor harmonizes above the melody\, the bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes\, and the baritone completes the chord\, usually below the lead. The melody is not usually sung by the tenor or baritone\, except for an infrequent note or two to avoid awkward voice leading\, in tags or codas\, or when some appropriate embellishment can be created. One characteristic feature of barbershop harmony is the use of what is known as “snakes” and “swipes”. This is when a chord is altered by a change in one or more non-melodic voices. Occasional passages may be sung by fewer than four voice parts. Barbershop music is generally performed by either a barbershop quartet\, a group of four singers which sings four-part harmony\, or a barbershop chorus\, which closely resembles a choir with the notable exception of the genre of music. \nAccording to the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS)\, “Barbershop music features songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies\, whose tones clearly define a tonal center and imply major and minor chords and barbershop (dominant and secondary dominant) seventh chords that resolve primarily around the circle of fifths\, while making frequent use of other resolutions.” Slower barbershop songs\, especially ballads\, often eschew a continuous beat\, and notes are often held (or sped up) ad libitum. Aside from the bass\, the voice parts in barbershop singing do not correspond closely to their classical music counterparts; the tenor range and tessitura are similar to those of the classical countertenor (including the fact that they sing their highest notes primarily in falsetto\, as a countertenor would)\, the baritone resembles a high lyric baritone in range and a tenor in tessitura\, and the lead generally corresponds to the tenor of classical repertoire\, with some singers possessing a tessitura more similar to that of a high baritone. Er zijn tientallen podia waarop zo’n 250 bands en 1000 theaterartiesten optredens verzorgen. DESCRIPTION:De Kermisfestival Tilburg / Tilburgse Kermis is de grootste kermis in de Benelux en wordt gehouden in de Noord-Brabantse plaats Tilburg. \nEr staan jaarlijks tussen de 230 en 240 attracties uit binnen- en buitenland\, in een 4\,5 kilometer lang lint door het centrum van de stad. De kermis trekt jaarlijks meer dan een miljoen bezoekers en is daarmee een van de best bezochte evenementen van Nederland. Hoewel de kermis met de tijd is meegegaan en dus voor het merendeel uit moderne attracties bestaat is er ook plaats ingeruimd voor een nostalgische kermis. De Tilburgse kermis duurt tien dagen: hij eindigt op de laatste zondag van juli en start dus negen dagen eerder op vrijdag. Ieder jaar treden op de themadagen bekende artiesten uit binnen- en buitenland op. Op de eerste zondag is het tussen 11:00 en 14:00 Blauwe zondag. Dit is een speciale ‘prikkelarme’ periode: geluiden en muziek van attracties worden dan gedempt. Op maandag is het Roze Maandag\, een evenement voor homo- en biseksuelen\, lesbiennes en transgenders (LHBT‘ers)\, na een eerste nichtenavond in 1990 werd dit al snel het drukstbezochte onderdeel van de Tilburgse Kermis. Sie gilt als Nachfolger von Neues aus der Anstalt\, die am 1. Oktober 2013 zum letzten Mal gezeigt wurde. Durch die Sendung führen die Kabarettisten Max Uthoff und Claus von Wagner. Seit Juni 2024 gehört auch Maike Kühl zum Stammensemble. Die Sendung wird seitdem in wechselnden Konstellationen präsentiert. DESCRIPTION:The World Heritage Committee meets once a year for an ordinary session to discuss the management of existing World Heritage Sites\, and accept nominations by countries. \nExtraordinary meetings can be convened at the request of two-thirds of the state members. Meetings are held within the territory of state members of the World Heritage Committee at their invitation. Rotation between regions and cultures is a consideration for selection and the location for the next session is chosen by the committee at the end of each session. The World Heritage Committee is a committee of the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization that selects the sites to be listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites\, including the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger\, defines the use of the World Heritage Fund and allocates financial assistance upon requests from States Parties. It comprises representatives from 21 state parties that are elected by the General Assembly of States Parties for a four-year term. These parties vote on decisions and proposals related to the World Heritage Convention and World Heritage List. According to the World Heritage Convention\, a committee member’s term of office is six years. DESCRIPTION:San Diego Comic-Con International is a comic book convention and nonprofit multi-genre entertainment event held annually in San Diego\, California\, since 1970; the name\, as given on its website\, is Comic-Con International: San Diego; but it is commonly known simply as Comic-Con or the San Diego Comic-Con or SDCC. \nThe convention was founded as the Golden State Comic Book Convention in 1970 by a group of San Diegans that included Shel Dorf\, Richard Alf\, Ken Krueger\, Ron Graf\, and Mike Towry; later\, it was called the “San Diego Comic Book Convention”\, Dorf said during an interview that he hoped the first Con would bring in 500 attendees. It is a four-day event (Thursday–Sunday) held during the summer (in July since 2003) at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego. On the Wednesday evening prior to the official opening\, professionals\, exhibitors\, and pre-registered guests for all four days can attend a pre-event “Preview Night” to give attendees the opportunity to walk the exhibit hall and see what will be available during the convention. \nComic-Con International also produces WonderCon\, held in Anaheim\, and SAM: Storytelling Across Media\, a conference held in 2016 in San Francisco and beginning in 2018 annually at the Comic-Con Museum in San Diego. Since 1974\, Comic-Con has bestowed its annual Inkpot Award on guests and persons of interest in the popular arts industries\, as well as on members of Comic-Con’s board of directors and the Convention committee. It is also the home of the Will Eisner Awards. Originally showcasing primarily comic books and science fiction/fantasy related film\, television\, and similar popular arts\, the convention has since included a larger range of pop culture and entertainment elements across virtually all genres\, including horror\, Western animation\, anime\, comics\, manga\, toys\, collectible card games\, video games\, webcomics\, and fantasy novels. DESCRIPTION:Zomergasten is een Nederlands televisieprogramma van de VPRO dat elk jaar in de zomer\, meer bepaald rond augustus\, op zondagavond rechtstreeks uitgezonden wordt. \nHet programma bestaat sinds 1988. In een avondvullend programma mag iedere zondag een bekende of interessante Nederlander\, Vlaming of Nederlandssprekende buitenlander zijn of haar favoriete televisieavond samenstellen. De gast komt meestal uit de literatuur\, wetenschap\, televisie\, de politiek of het bedrijfsleven. De gekozen fragmenten worden getoond en aan de hand daarvan wordt de gast geïnterviewd door een interviewer/presentator. Het programma is gaandeweg uitgegroeid tot een van de bekendste programma’s van de Nederlandse publieke omroep. Sinds 2003 wordt na elke aflevering een film uitgezonden die door de gast van de avond is uitgekozen. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJanine Abbring presenteert het allerlaatste seizoen van VPRO Zomergasten. Ze was tussen 2017 en 2022 al te zien als vaste interviewer van het programma. Van 26 juli tot en met 30 augustus is VPRO Zomergasten elke zondagavond live te zien op NPO 2 en NPO Start. Cabaretier en programmamaker Peter Pannekoek (Hilversum\, 1986) is op zondag 26 juli de eerste gast in het 39e en tevens laatste seizoen van VPRO Zomergasten. Janine Abbring interviewt hem aan de hand van door hem geselecteerde tv-\, online- en filmfragmenten. Pannekoek: ‘Het zal geen college worden over één onderwerp\, maar ik wil de kijker trakteren op een scala aan fragmenten die hopelijk inspireren\, enthousiasmeren of emotioneren.’ Peter Pannekoek is een van de meest bepalende stemmen van het Nederlandse cabaret. Hij begon zijn carrière bij het Amsterdamse stand-up-collectief Comedytrain\, nadat hij in 2006 het Comedy Concours van het Amsterdams Kleinkunst Festival won. Bij het grote publiek brak hij in 2014 door als huiscabaretier van De wereld draait door\, waarna hij in 2017 teamcaptain werd in het satirische programma Dit was het nieuws. In het theater vestigde hij zijn naam met drie geprezen solovoorstellingen: Zacht van binnen (2015)\, Later was alles beter (2018) en DNA (2022). Voor Later was alles beter ontving hij in 2019 de Neerlands Hoop\, de prijs voor de meest veelbelovende theatermaker. Met DNA won hij in 2023 de Poelifinario\, de prijs voor het indrukwekkendste cabaretprogramma van het seizoen. De jury prees hem om zijn hoge grapdichtheid en zijn vermogen om grote maatschappelijke thema’s\, zoals de #MeToo-discussie en morele hypocrisie\, invoelbaar en geestig te maken. Daarnaast verzorgde hij tweemaal de oudejaarsconference: Nieuw bloed (2021) trok miljoenen kijkers. In het lovend ontvangen Perspectief (2025) keek hij vanuit een marslandschap neer op de aarde en fileerde hij thema’s als offerbereidheid en menselijk onvermogen. Het werd een van de best bekeken oudejaarsconferences ooit. \nNaast zijn theaterwerk presenteerde hij meerdere malen het Gouden Televizier-Ring Gala en is hij hartstochtelijk pleitbezorger van cultuur. Zo maakte hij het cultuurprogramma Waarom gaan we niet vaker?\, waarin hij – in zijn eigen woorden ‘theaterslet’ – zijn liefde voor theater deelt met een breed publiek. Tegenwoordig schuift hij maandelijks aan bij Eva Jinek met een persoonlijke selectie van theater- en dansvoorstellingen om ‘de televisiekijkers van de bank af de schouwburg in te jagen.’ Peter Pannekoek groeide op in een Hilversums medianest. Nadat hij eerdere studies Economie en Bedrijfskunde en Media en Cultuur niet had afgemaakt\, koos hij op zijn twintigste definitief voor het podium. Een cruciaal moment in zijn jeugd was het zien van de voorstelling Ruwe Pit van Theo Maassen\, een ervaring die hij later omschreef als een eyeopener. Hij besefte dat je een verhaal op een podium kon vertellen en dat mensen daar ook nog voor wilden betalen. In zijn werk zoekt Pannekoek bewust de grenzen van het ongemak op. Hij schuwt geen enkel onderwerp en vertrekt vanuit het idee dat mensen fundamenteel ‘gemankeerd en imperfect’ zijn.
