SUMMARY:Save the Observatory Science Centre Herstmonceux - petition
DESCRIPTION:The Observatory Science Centre is an educational charity which has called the Grade II listed\, former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux\, East Sussex\, home for the last 30 years. \nThe Canadian landlords\, Queen’s University\, who also own Herstmonceux Castle\, are not renewing the Science Centre’s lease\, so come the end of the 2026 season the Science Centre will be homeless. Over the years the science centre have worked tirelessly to fund and restore the site and the telescopes back to their former glory. The centre is a major venue for exhibitions\, lectures and educational programmes. The renovated telescopes provide a unique setting for the general public\, schools\, colleges\, and brownie and scout groups to learn about science\, space and the world around them. Whilst the Science Centre is in search for a new site to continue operations beyond 2026\, they should not have to leave the Observatory site at all and the historic site should be preserved for future generations as a great educational tool of significant historical importance. Talks zijn er o.a. van jonge klimaatactivisten tot inheemse leiders\, van creatieve denkers tot aan de woorden van Jane Goodall. Tijdens de festivalavond zie je filmfragmenten en hoor je inspirerende talks die laten zien hoe verhalen ons in actie kunnen brengen. In het panelgesprek staat centraal hoe kunst\, film en activisme elkaar kunnen versterken. De avond begint met een bijzondere performance en biedt bezoekers de kans mee te praten\, ideeën uit te wisselen en nieuwe connecties te leggen. De openingsavond van het Tomorrow Filmfestival vindt plaats op donderdag 20 november in het DeLaMar Theater. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nDe Kerstpuzzel van Dr. Denker in het Dagblad van het Noorden bestaat uit veertig kleine rebussen of beeldcrypto’s met een eigen oplossing. \nHet aantal letters van elk oplossingswoord wordt aangegeven. Van groot belang is de stand of positie van de getekende letters en woorden\, maar soms ook de vorm en afwijkende achtergrondkleur. Bij veel plaatjes staat zoiets als ‘K=T’\, wat betekent dat het plaatje iets voorstelt waar een K in voorkomt\, en die letter moet worden veranderd in een T om de oplossing te vinden. Datzelfde kan echter ook met een voorwerp worden uitgebeeld: er staat een kist op het plaatje en dat moet worden geïnterpreteerd als ‘K=T’. Staat er ‘–M’\, dan moet de letter M uit het afgebeelde voorwerp verwijderd worden. De lettercombinatie ‘DMV’ kan geïnterpreteerd worden als ‘M in DV’ maar evengoed als ‘–DV’. Tot 1994 waren het zwart-wit plaatjes die met de hand waren getekend. De oplossingen sluiten aan bij het jaarlijks wisselende puzzelthema. In een introductietekst worden allerlei aanwijzingen over het thema gegeven. Vast grapje in elke kerstpuzzel is een opgave met een opgedirkte schaars geklede dame die staat voor ‘snol’\, ‘slet’\, ‘hoer’ of ‘del’. Vaak ook is er in een van de plaatjes een verborgen verwijzing te vinden naar de oplossing van een ander plaatje. DESCRIPTION:Dalek remembrance is on the 21 December every year\, this date was chosen because on the 21 December 1963\, the Daleks (/ˈdɑːlɪks/ (listen) DAH-leks) first made their appearence on screen and into history. \nThe Daleks are a fictional extraterrestrial race of mutants principally portrayed in the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who. The Daleks were conceived by science-fiction writer Terry Nation and first appeared in the 1963 Doctor Who serial The Daleks\, in shells designed by Raymond Cusick. Drawing inspiration from the Nazis\, Nation portrayed the Daleks as violent\, merciless and pitiless cyborg aliens\, who demand total conformity to their will and are bent on the conquest of the universe and the extermination of what they see as inferior races. Collectively they are the greatest enemies of Doctor Who’s protagonist\, the Time Lord known as “the Doctor.” During the second year of the original Doctor Who programme (1963-1989)\, the Daleks developed their own form of time travel. In the beginning of the second Doctor Who TV series that debuted in 2005\, it was established that the Daleks had engaged in a Time War against the Time Lords that affected much of the universe and altered parts of history. \nIn the programme’s narrative\, the planet Skaro suffered a thousand-year war between two societies: the Kaleds and the Thals. During this time-period\, many natives of Skaro became badly mutated by fallout from nuclear weapons and chemical warfare. The Kaled government believed in genetic purity and swore to “exterminate the Thals” for being inferior. Believing his own society was becoming weak and that it was his duty to create a new master race from the ashes of his people\, the Kaled scientist Davros genetically modified several Kaleds into squid-like life-forms he called Daleks\, removing “weaknesses” such as mercy and sympathy while increasing aggression and survival-instinct. He then integrated them with tank-like robotic shells equipped with advanced technology based on the same life-support system he himself used since being burned and blinded by a nuclear attack. His creations became intent on dominating the universe by enslaving or purging all “inferior” non-Dalek life. The Daleks are the show’s most popular and famous villains and their returns to the series over the decades have often gained media attention. Their frequent declaration “Exterminate!” has become common usage. Many of the Christmas Lectures were published. On the 200-year anniversary of the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures\, the 2025 Lectures will see leading space scientist Dame Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock take audiences on an epic voyage through time and space. Joined by a host of very special guests – from astronauts to history-making astronomers – Maggie will explore the extraordinary breakthroughs that have revolutionised our understanding of the universe\, enabling us to see ever further into space\, and ever further back in time. Maggie helped develop the James Webb Telescope\, the most powerful space telescope ever created – which launched on Christmas day 2021 before travelling a million miles to begin its orbit of the sun. Unpacking James Webb’s latest breathtaking images\, Maggie will reveal how this “time-travelling” telescope is now rewriting the story of the Big Bang and allowing us to witness the birth of the first stars and galaxies that followed. \nAs NASA prepares to return humans to the moon for the first time since 1972\, Maggie will investigate how manned spaceflight has transformed our relationship with our nearest neighbour – and with our home planet. And\, delving further back in time\, she’ll explore how the night sky has always held a fascination for humanity – investigating what the moon and stars meant to ancient societies across the world. Maggie will also explain how the latest space technologies – from probes and orbiters to the most recent Mars rovers – are shedding astonishing new light on the planets in our solar system.
