SUMMARY:Save the Observatory Science Centre Herstmonceux - petition
DESCRIPTION:The Observatory Science Centre is an educational charity which has called the Grade II listed\, former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux\, East Sussex\, home for the last 30 years. \nThe Canadian landlords\, Queen’s University\, who also own Herstmonceux Castle\, are not renewing the Science Centre’s lease\, so come the end of the 2026 season the Science Centre will be homeless. Over the years the science centre have worked tirelessly to fund and restore the site and the telescopes back to their former glory. The centre is a major venue for exhibitions\, lectures and educational programmes. The renovated telescopes provide a unique setting for the general public\, schools\, colleges\, and brownie and scout groups to learn about science\, space and the world around them. Whilst the Science Centre is in search for a new site to continue operations beyond 2026\, they should not have to leave the Observatory site at all and the historic site should be preserved for future generations as a great educational tool of significant historical importance. DESCRIPTION:Burning Man is a week-long large-scale desert event focused on “community\, art\, self-expression\, and self-reliance” held annually in the Western United States. \nThe event’s name comes from its ceremony on the penultimate night of the event: the symbolic burning of a large wooden effigy\, referred to as the Man\, the Saturday evening before Labor Day. Since 1990\, the event has been at Black Rock City in northwestern Nevada\, a temporary city erected in the Black Rock Desert about 100 miles (160 km) north-northeast of Reno. According to Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey in 2004\, the event is guided by ten stated principles: radical inclusion\, gifting\, decommodification\, radical self-reliance\, radical self-expression\, communal effort\, civic responsibility\, leaving no trace\, participation\, and immediacy. Burning Man features no headliners or scheduled performers; participants create all the art\, activities\, and events. Artwork includes experimental and interactive sculptures\, buildings\, performances\, and art cars\, among other media. These contributions are inspired by a theme chosen annually by the Burning Man Project. NPR said of Burning Man in 2019\, “Once considered an underground gathering for bohemians and free spirits of all stripes\, Burning Man has since evolved into a destination for social media influencers\, celebrities and the Silicon Valley elite.” \nBurning Man originated on June 22\, 1986\, on Baker Beach in San Francisco as a small function organized by Larry Harvey and Jerry James\, the builders of the first Man. It has since been held annually\, spanning the nine days leading up to and including Labor Day. Over the event’s history\, attendance has generally increased. In 2019\, 78\,850 people participated. Burning Man is organized by the Burning Man Project\, a nonprofit organization that\, in 2013\, succeeded Black Rock City LLC\, a for-profit limited liability company. Black Rock City LLC was formed in 1999 to represent the event’s organizers and is now considered a subsidiary of the nonprofit organization. The Burning Man Project endorses multiple smaller regional events guided by the Burning Man principles in the United States and internationally. DESCRIPTION:Open Monumentendagen worden in Europese landen jaarlijks georganiseerd in de maand september\, gewoonlijk niet vrij toegankelijke monumenten worden dan gedurende een of meer dagen opengesteld voor publiek. \nDe Europese Open Monumentendagen vonden voor het eerst plaats in 1991. Daarvoor waren er al lokale initiatieven: in 1984 vond in Frankrijk de eerste Journée Portes Ouvertes plaats\, en in Nederland was de eerste Open Monumentendag in 1987. Vlaanderen volgde in 1989. Naar aanleiding van het succes van de Franse en Nederlandse dagen\, organiseerde het Comité voor Cultureel Erfgoed van de Raad van Europa in 1989 een internationale bijeenkomst\, waarbij overleg plaatsvond over eventuele Europese Open Monumentendagen. De plannen die tijdens deze bijeenkomst bedacht zijn\, werden door de Raad van Europa en de Nederlandse Stichting Open Monumentendag verder uitgewerkt. Dit leidde tot de eerste European Heritage Days in 1991. In dat jaar deden er elf landen mee\, in 2005 waren het er 47. In 2017 waren er vijftig staten die de Europese Culturele Conventie ondertekenden aangesloten bij European Heritage Days en er werden 70.000 georganiseerd. Naast het openstellen van gebouwen worden er activiteiten georganiseerd voor jong en oud\, zoals wandelingen\, fietstochten\, boottochten en lezingen. \nHet thema voor 2025 is “Erfgoed & Architectuur – Gebouw(d) om te blijven”. In 1975 riep de Raad van Europa het jaar uit tot het “Europese Jaar van het Architectonisch Erfgoed”. Dit initiatief hielp om architectuur te erkennen als een belangrijk onderdeel van onze leefomgeving. Het stimuleerde de zorg voor historische gebouwen in heel Europa\, waardoor de basis werd gelegd voor de monumentenzorg zoals we die nu kennen. Precies vijftig jaar later\, tijdens Open Monumentendag 2025\, wordt stilgestaan bij dit bijzondere jubileum en wordt het architectonische erfgoed van Nederland in de schijnwerpers gezet. De slogan ‘Gebouw(d) om te blijven’ benadrukt de waarde van de verscheidenheid aan historische gebouwen die ons land verrijken en nodigt uit om na te denken over de toekomst van dit erfgoed. Architectuur is meer dan bakstenen en beton. DESCRIPTION:The hobbits are described as being of three types\, Harfoots\, Fallohides\, and Stoors\, all deriving from a region to the east of the Shire\, in particular the Angle between two rivers\, and migrating to the Shire at different times.\nTolkien Week is observed as the calendar week\, starting on Sunday\, containing September 22\, which is always observed as Hobbit Day. \nBoth celebrations began in 1978. Hobbit Day in particular\, and Tolkien Week as well\, have gained some measure of legal dignity through a variety of proclamations\, declarations\, tributes and similar governmental documents prepared by elected officials who support the Society\, its goals and the observance of these holidays. Both events have attracted bipartisan support\, from the county courthouse to the White House and U.S. Capitol. Tolkien Week honors J. R. R. Tolkien and his son and editor\, Christopher J.R. Tolkien\, and celebrates the Middle-earth cycle: The Silmarillion\, The Hobbit\, The Lord of the Rings (The Fellowship of the Ring\, The Two Towers\, The Return of the King)\, Unfinished Tales\, and The History of Middle-earth. \nHobbit Day and Tolkien Week fall during the “Back to School” season and can create a bright new interest for students in literature classes and libraries. A number of schools and libraries host seminars and art shows during the week. Those with the facilities and budget sometimes arrange for a showing of one or more of the motion pictures based on the works. A few have even presented marathon showings of the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings films! \nThe most popular method of observing Tolkien Week is the library\, bookstore or school display.  Most libraries have bulletin boards or cases\, and some have enclosed display tables and other facilities up to and including display windows of considerable size. Many librarians among our members and friends create displays; other members contact their libraries and assist in preparing displays. The same is certainly true of schools. Tolkien Week displays and seminars have been held in places ranging from distinguished universities to libraries located in prisons\, mental institutions\, and army bases.  If your activities include presentation of research papers or other materials suitable for publication\, please consider submitting the available works to the Society for possible publication in Minas Tirith Evening-Star: Journal of the American Tolkien Society. \nHobbit Day\, on the other hand\, is scheduled to fall on the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins – two fictional characters in J. R. R. Tolkien’s popular set of books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings –  mutual birthday\, the date of the Long Awaited Party (translated in text by Tolkien as September 22).  This is perhaps the oldest festal observance associated with Tolkien fandom.  Celebration actually predates the formal designation of the holiday. A variety of names have been applied to the date and the celebrations. In large part\, Hobbit Day is usually taken up with the fun activities – the feasts\, games\, costume events\, fireworks and the like. Hobbit Day is a virtually ideal holiday\, incorporating attractive elements of several others: the masquerade fun of Halloween\, the feast of Thanksgiving\, the exchange of greeting cards and gifts associated with Christmas and birthdays\, the picnic atmosphere of Labor Day and Memorial Day\, the fireworks of Independence Day (or Guy Fawkes Day)… and the study and reflection associated with many commemorative days throughout the year. \nAccording to the fictional setting\, Bilbo was born in the year of 2890 and Frodo in the year of 2968 in the Third Age (1290 and 1368 respectively in Shire-Reckoning.) Tolkien Week is the week containing Hobbit Day. The Fellowship of the Ring opened with a celebration of Bilbo’s birthday. It was a large party with food\, fireworks\, dancing and much merriment. Some Tolkien fans celebrate by emulating the hobbits’ parties. Other simply go barefoot in honour of the hobbits\, who don’t wear shoes. Some schools and libraries use this as an opportunity to pique interest in Tolkien’s work by putting up displays and hosting events. The Lord of the Rings: “There is no record of the Shire-folk commemorating either March 25 or September 22; but in the Westfarthing\, especially in the country round Hobbiton Hill\, there grew a custom of making holiday and dancing in the Party Field\, when weather permitted\, on April 6.” In Gondor\, however\, “in honour of Frodo Yavannie 30\, which corresponded to the former September 22\, his birthday\, was made a festival\, and the leap-year was provided for by doubling this feast\, called Cormare or Ringday.” \nLinks:\nHobbit Day and Tolkien Week
