DESCRIPTION:The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST or “Webb” / called Henrietta Leavitt Teleskop by german scientists Harald Lesch and Josef M. Gaßner) is a space telescope to succeed the Hubble Space Telescope as NASA‘s flagship astrophysics mission. \nThe JWST will provide improved infrared resolution and sensitivity over Hubble\, and will enable a broad range of investigations across the fields of astronomy and cosmology\, including observing some of the most distant events and objects in the universe\, such as the formation of the first galaxies. The primary mirror of the JWST\, the Optical Telescope Element\, is composed of eighteen 1.32 metres hexagonal mirror segments made of gold-plated beryllium which combine to create a 6.5 metres diameter mirror that is considerably larger than the Hubble’s 2.4 metres mirror. Unlike the Hubble\, which observes in the near ultraviolet\, visible\, and near infrared (0.1 to 1 μm) spectra\, the JWST will observe in a lower frequency range\, from long-wavelength visible light through mid-infrared (0.6 to 28.3 μm)\, which will allow it to observe high redshift objects that are too old and too distant for the Hubble to observe. \nThe telescope must be kept very cold in order to observe in the infrared without interference\, so it will be deployed in space near the Earth–Sun L2 Lagrangian point\, and a large sunshield made of silicon-coated and aluminium-coated Kapton will keep its mirror and instruments below 50 Kelvin (K). The JWST is being developed by NASA — with significant contributions from the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency — and is named for James E. Webb\, who was the administrator of NASA from 1961 to 1968 and played an integral role in the Apollo program. The prime contractor is Northrop Grumman. Development began in 1996 for a launch that was initially planned for 2007 and a 500-million-dollar budget\, but the project has had numerous delays and cost overruns\, and underwent a major redesign in 2005. DESCRIPTION:The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is a satellite altimeter jointly developed and operated by NASA and CNES\, the French space agency\, in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency (UKSA). \nThe objectives of the mission are to make the first global survey of the Earth’s surface water\, to observe the fine details of the ocean surface topography\, and to measure how terrestrial surface water bodies change over time. While past satellite missions like the Jason series altimeters (TOPEX/Poseidon\, Jason-1\, Jason-2\, Jason-3) have provided variation in river and lake water surface elevations at select locations\, SWOT will provide the first truly global observations of changing water levels\, stream slopes\, and inundation extents in rivers\, lakes\, and floodplains. In the world’s oceans\, SWOT will observe ocean circulation at unprecedented scales of 15–25 km (9.3–15.5 mi)\, approximately an order of magnitude finer than current satellites. DESCRIPTION:Euclid is a visible to near-infrared space telescope developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Euclid Consortium\, the objective of the Euclid mission is to better understand dark energy and dark matter by accurately measuring the acceleration of the universe. \nTo achieve this\, the Korsch-type telescope will measure the shapes of galaxies at varying distances from Earth and investigate the relationship between distance and redshift. The mission is named after the ancient Greek mathematician Euclid. Euclid is a medium-class (“M-class”) mission and is part of the Cosmic Vision campaign of ESA’s Science Programme. This class of missions have an ESA budget cap at around €500 million. DESCRIPTION:Plankton\, Aerosol\, Cloud\, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) is a NASA Earth-observing satellite mission that will continue and advance observations of global ocean color\, biogeochemistry\, and ecology\, as well as the carbon cycle\, aerosols and clouds. \nPACE will be used to identify the extent and duration of phytoplankton blooms and improve understanding of air quality. These and other uses of PACE data will benefit the economy and society\, especially sectors that rely on water quality\, fisheries and food security. After being proposed for cancellation under President Trump’s FY 2018 budget\, it was restored by Congress. The PACE project is managed by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The main instrument and bus were designed and built at Goddard Space Flight Center. On 4 February 2020\, NASA announced the selection of SpaceX to launch PACE on a Falcon 9\, at a total cost to NASA of US$80.4 million\, including the launch service and other mission-related costs. The total cost of the mission is $964 million\, which includes spacecraft construction\, launch\, and operations. DART impacted the asteroid Dimorphos\, the smaller of two objects forming the binary asteroid 65803 Didymos\, on 27 September 2022. Hera has a mass of 1128 kilograms and carries a payload of cameras\, an altimeter\, and a spectrometer. It will also carry two nano-satellite CubeSats\, called Milani and Juventas. Hera will fully characterise the composition and physical properties of the binary asteroid system including\, for the first time\, the sub-surface and internal structures. DESCRIPTION:Europa Clipper (previously known as Europa Multiple Flyby Mission) is a space probe in development by NASA. \nPlanned for launch aboard a Falcon Heavy in October 2024 (the 21-day launch window period opens on October 10\, 2024)\, the spacecraft is being developed to study the Galilean moon Europa through a series of flybys while in orbit around Jupiter\, it is the largest spacecraft NASA has ever developed for a planetary mission. This mission is a scheduled flight of the Planetary Science Division\, designated a Large Strategic Science Mission\, and funded under the Planetary Missions Program Office‘s Solar System Exploration program as its second flight. It is also supported by the new Ocean Worlds Exploration Program. Europa Clipper will perform follow-up studies to those made by the Galileo spacecraft during its eight years (1995 – 2003) in Jupiter orbit\, which indicated the existence of a subsurface ocean underneath Europa’s ice crust. Plans to send a spacecraft to Europa were initially conceived with projects such as Europa Orbiter and Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter\, in which a spacecraft would be injected into orbit around Europa. However\, due to the adverse effects of radiation from Jupiter’s magnetosphere in Europa orbit\, it was decided that it would be safer to inject a spacecraft into an elliptical orbit around Jupiter and make 44 close flybys of the moon instead. The mission began as a joint investigation between the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL)\, and will be built with a scientific payload of nine instruments contributed by JPL\, APL\, Southwest Research Institute\, University of Texas at Austin\, Arizona State University and University of Colorado Boulder. The upcoming mission complements ESA‘s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer launched in 2023\, which will fly-by Europa twice and Callisto multiple times before moving into orbit around Ganymede. The spacecraft will use gravity assists from Mars in February 2025 and Earth in December 2026\, before arriving at Europa in April 2030. NASA will provide live coverage of prelaunch and launch activities for Europa Clipper\, the agency’s mission to explore Jupiter’s icy moon Europa. DESCRIPTION:The Observatory Science Centre is an educational charity which has called the Grade II listed\, former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux\, East Sussex\, home for the last 30 years. \nThe Canadian landlords\, Queen’s University\, who also own Herstmonceux Castle\, are not renewing the Science Centre’s lease\, so come the end of the 2026 season the Science Centre will be homeless. Over the years the science centre have worked tirelessly to fund and restore the site and the telescopes back to their former glory. The centre is a major venue for exhibitions\, lectures and educational programmes. The renovated telescopes provide a unique setting for the general public\, schools\, colleges\, and brownie and scout groups to learn about science\, space and the world around them. Whilst the Science Centre is in search for a new site to continue operations beyond 2026\, they should not have to leave the Observatory site at all and the historic site should be preserved for future generations as a great educational tool of significant historical importance. DESCRIPTION:The Vera C. Rubin Observatory\, formerly known as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST)\, is an astronomical observatory in Chile\, its main task will be carrying out a synoptic astronomical survey\, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time. \nThe word “synoptic” is derived from the Greek words σύν (syn ‘together’) and ὄψις (opsis ‘view’)\, and describes observations that give a broad view of a subject at a particular time. The observatory is located on the El Peñón peak of Cerro Pachón\, a 2\,682-meter-high mountain in Coquimbo Region\, in northern Chile\, alongside the existing Gemini South and Southern Astrophysical Research Telescopes. The LSST Base Facility is located about 100 kilometres away from the observatory by road\, in the city of La Serena. The observatory is named for Vera Rubin\, an American astronomer who pioneered discoveries about galactic rotation rates. The Rubin Observatory will house the Simonyi Survey Telescope\, a wide-field reflecting telescope with an 8.4-meter primary mirror that will photograph the entire available sky every few nights. The telescope uses a novel three-mirror design\, a variant of three-mirror anastigmat\, which allows a compact telescope to deliver sharp images over a very wide 3.5-degree-diameter field of view. Images will be recorded by a 3.2-gigapixel charge-coupled device imaging (CCD) camera\, the largest digital camera ever constructed. \nThe LSST was proposed in 2001\, and construction of the mirror began (with private funds) in 2007. LSST then became the top-ranked large ground-based project in the 2010 Astrophysics Decadal Survey\, and the project officially began construction on 1 August 2014\, when the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) authorized the FY2014 portion ($27.5 million) of its construction budget. Funding comes from the NSF\, the United States Department of Energy\, and private funding raised by the dedicated international non-profit organization\, the LSST Discovery Alliance. Operations are under the management of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA). The total construction cost is expected to be about $680 million. Site construction began on 14 April 2015 with the ceremonial laying of the first stone. The first on-sky observations with the engineering camera occurred on 24 October 2024\, while system first light images were released 23 June 2025. Full survey operations are planned to begin later in 2025\, due to COVID-related schedule delays. Rubin Observatory data is scheduled to become fully public after two years. \nLinks:\nVera C. Rond 01:00 staat de radiant van de zwerm in het hoogste punt (op 18°) aan de hemel. Het beste moment om ω-Scorpiiden waar te nemen is op 2 juni rond 02:15. De radiant van de zwerm staat dan ongeveer 16° boven de zuidzuidwestelijke horizon; niet erg gunstig. Er is dan bij ons ieder uur niet meer dan één meteoor zichtbaar van deze zwerm. In totaal zijn er\, door meteoren van andere zwermen en sporadische meteoren\, bij donkere en heldere hemel circa 2–6 “vallende sterren” per uur te zien. Op een goed donkere locatie zijn ongeveer 30% meer meteoren zichtbaar dan in dichtbevolkt gebied. De Maan is voor ongeveer 40% verlicht\, maar gaat om 02:17 onder. Im Vortrag geht es jedoch nicht um die Umlaufbewegung der beiden Sterne umeinander\, sondern um ihre jeweils eigene Drehung um sich selbst. Die Eigenrotation verändert sich im Laufe des Lebens eines Sterns und kann zur Bestimmung des Sternalters genutzt werden. Die zwei Sterne eines Doppelsterns sind gemeinsam aus derselben Gaswolke entstanden und daher gleich alt. ANDES ist der hochauflösende Spektrograph für dieses Großteleskop\, der hochpräzise und stabile Spektroskopie vom ultravioletten Licht (350 nm) bis ins nahe Infrarot (ca. 2 µm) ermöglichen wird. Das AIP in Potsdam ist für die Entwicklung und den Bau des optisch-ultravioletten Arms des ANDES-Spektrographen\, genannt ANDES-UBV\, zuständig. Dr. Michael Weber ist Leiter der Abteilung „Hochauflösende Spektroskopie und Polarimetrie“ am AIP. Er gibt in seinem Vortrag einen kurzen Abriss der Spektroskopie im Allgemeinen und der hochauflösenden Echelle-Spektroskopie im Speziellen und stellt das ANDES-Projekt vor. It covers the five detection types\, their parameters and statistics\, and the algorithm for finding them.\nSETI@home: Data Analysis and Findings describes the back end (Nebula) and its results: RFI removal\, candidate finding and ranking. It explains how artificial signals\, or ‘birdies’\, were used to optimize algorithms and estimate overall sensitivity.\n\nSETI@home (“SETI at home”) is a project of the Berkeley SETI Research Center to analyze radio signals with the aim of searching for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence. Until March 2020\, it was run as an Internet-based public volunteer computing project that employed the BOINC software platform. It is hosted by the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and is one of many activities undertaken as part of the worldwide SETI effort. SETI@home software was released to the public on May 17\, 1999\, making it the third large-scale use of volunteer computing over the Internet for research purposes\, after Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) was launched in 1996 and distributed.net in 1997. Along with MilkyWay@home and Einstein@home\, it has the investigation of phenomena in interstellar space as its primary purpose. In March 2020\, the project stopped sending out new work to SETI@home users\, bringing the crowdsourced computing aspect of the project to a stop. At the time\, the team intended to shift focus onto the analysis and interpretation of the 20 years’ worth of accumulated data. However\, the team left open the possibility of eventually resuming volunteer computing using data from other radio telescopes\, such as MeerKAT and FAST. As of November 2021\, the science team has analysed the data and removed noisy signals (Radio Frequency Interference) using the Nebula tool they developed and will choose the top-scoring 100 or so multiplets to be observed using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope\, to which they have been granted 24 hours of observation time. On March 31\, 2020\, UC Berkeley stopped sending out new data for SETI@Home clients to process\, ending the effort for the time being. The program stated they were at a point of “diminishing returns” with the volunteer processing and needed to put the effort into hibernation while they processed the results. Until 2020\, SETI@home procured its data from the Arecibo Observatory facility that was operated by the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center and administered by SRI International. The decreasing operating budget for the observatory has created a shortfall of funds which has not been made up from other sources such as private donors\, NASA\, other foreign research institutions\, nor private non-profit organizations such as SETI@home. However\, in the overall long-term views held by many involved with the SETI project\, any usable radio telescope could take over from Arecibo (which completely collapsed in December 2020)\, as all the SETI systems are portable and relocatable. \nLinks:\nSETI@home

SUMMARY:Meteorenzwerm δ-Cassiopeiïden in juli 2025
DESCRIPTION:De meteorenzwerm δ-Cassiopeiïden (naar de ster Delta Cassiopeiae) bereikt op dinsdag 29 juli 2025\, rond 22:00\, zijn maximum. \nWanneer de radiant in het zenit zou staan\, zouden er van deze zwerm naar verwachting gemiddeld zo’n 10 meteoren per uur vallen. Rond 06:00 staat de radiant van de zwerm in het hoogste punt (op 79°) aan de hemel. Het beste moment om δ-Cassiopeiïden waar te nemen is op 30 juli rond 03:00. De radiant van de zwerm staat dan ongeveer 64° boven de noordoostelijke horizon. Door de matige omstandigheden zijn er in onze streken dan vermoedelijk maar circa 3–7 meteoren per uur van deze zwerm te zien. Samen met meteoren van andere zwermen\, en sporadische meteoren\, zijn er bij donkere\, heldere hemel in totaal circa 11–18 “vallende sterren” per uur te zien. Op een donkere locatie zijn ongeveer vijf keer zoveel meteoren te zien als in dichtbevolkt gebied. De Maan stoort niet. Rond 05:15 gaat het schemeren en om 05:58 komt de Zon op. Over het algemeen zijn de de meteoren van een zwerm niet alleen op de dag van het maximum zichtbaar. Zo is gedurende circa 5 dagen rondom het maximum meer dan 50% van het maximum aantal meteoren per uur van de δ-Cassiopeiïden te zien. Tot 6 dagen voor en na het maximum zijn nog meteoren van deze zwerm te herkennen. De zwerm heeft daarmee een relatief korte piek. Er zijn dus nog meer kansen\, voor het geval het in de nacht van het maximum niet helder is. Wel is iedere dag die je eerder voor het maximum\, of later na het maximum waarneemt het aantal meteoren dat zichtbaar is circa 20% kleiner. Rond 03:30 staat de radiant van de zwerm in het hoogste punt (op 40°) aan de hemel. Het beste moment om δ-Aquariden noord waar te nemen is op 8 augustus rond 04:30. De radiant van de zwerm staat dan ongeveer 38° boven de horizon\, in het zuidzuidwesten. Er is dan bij ons ieder uur niet meer dan één meteoor zichtbaar van deze zwerm. In totaal zijn er\, door meteoren van andere zwermen en sporadische meteoren\, bij donkere en heldere hemel circa 4–10 meteoren per uur zichtbaar. Op een goed donkere locatie zijn ongeveer 50% meer meteoren te zien dan in een grote stad. De Maan is voor ongeveer 100% verlicht en is een flinke stoorzender; alleen de helderste meteoren zijn hierdoor dit jaar zichtbaar. De Maan gaat om 04:28 onder\, en stoort daarna natuurlijk niet. De radiant staat op dat moment zo’n 18° boven de zuidoostelijke horizon; niet erg gunstig. Er is dan bij ons ieder uur niet meer dan één meteoor zichtbaar van deze zwerm. In totaal zijn er\, door meteoren van andere zwermen en sporadische meteoren\, bij donkere en heldere hemel circa 3–8 meteoren per uur zichtbaar. De Maan is voor ongeveer 100% verlicht en is een flinke stoorzender; dit jaar zijn hierdoor alleen de helderste meteoren zichtbaar. Rond 05:30 gaat het schemeren en om 06:15 komt de Zon op.
