DESCRIPTION:Amelia Earhart Day is celebrated on July 24. \nAmelia Mary Earhart (/ˈɛərhɑːrt/ AIR-hart\, born July 24\, 1897; disappeared July 2\, 1937; declared dead January 5\, 1939) was an American aviation pioneer and writer. Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records\, was one of the first aviators to promote commercial air travel\, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences\, and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines\, an organization for female pilots. Born and raised in Atchison\, Kansas\, and later in Des Moines\, Iowa\, Earhart developed a passion for adventure at a young age\, steadily gaining flying experience from her twenties. In 1928\, Earhart became the first female passenger to cross the Atlantic by airplane (accompanying pilot Wilmer Stultz)\, for which she achieved celebrity status. In 1932\, piloting a Lockheed Vega 5B\, Earhart made a nonstop solo transatlantic flight\, becoming the first woman to achieve such a feat. She received the United States Distinguished Flying Cross for this accomplishment. \nIn 1935\, Earhart became a visiting faculty member at Purdue University as an advisor to aeronautical engineering and a career counselor to female students. She was also a member of the National Woman’s Party and an early supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment. Known as one of the most inspirational American figures in aviation from the late 1920s throughout the 1930s\, Earhart’s legacy is often compared to the early aeronautical career of pioneer aviator Charles Lindbergh\, as well as to figures like First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt for their close friendship and lasting impact on the issue of women’s causes from that period. \nDuring an attempt at becoming the first woman to complete a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937 in a Purdue-funded Lockheed Model 10-E Electra\, Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. The two were last seen in Lae\, New Guinea\, on July 2\, 1937\, on the last land stop before Howland Island and one of their final legs of the flight. It is generally presumed that she and Noonan died somewhere in the Pacific during the circumnavigation\, just three weeks prior to her fortieth birthday. Nearly one year and six months after she and Noonan disappeared\, Earhart was officially declared dead. Investigations and significant public interest in their disappearance still continue over 80 years later. \nDecades after her presumed death\, Earhart was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1968 and the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1973. She now has several commemorative memorials named in her honor around the United States\, including an urban park\, an airport\, a residence hall\, a museum\, a research foundation\, a bridge\, a cargo ship\, an earth-fill dam\, four schools\, a hotel\, a playhouse\, a library\, multiple roads\, and more. She also has a minor planet\, planetary corona\, and newly-discovered lunar crater named after her. DESCRIPTION:Zomergasten is een Nederlands televisieprogramma van de VPRO dat elk jaar in de zomer\, meer bepaald rond augustus\, op zondagavond rechtstreeks uitgezonden wordt. \nHet programma bestaat sinds 1988. In een avondvullend programma mag iedere zondag een bekende of interessante Nederlander\, Vlaming of Nederlandssprekende buitenlander zijn of haar favoriete televisieavond samenstellen. De gast komt meestal uit de literatuur\, wetenschap\, televisie\, de politiek of het bedrijfsleven. \nDe gekozen fragmenten worden getoond en aan de hand daarvan wordt de gast geïnterviewd door een interviewer/presentator. Het programma is gaandeweg uitgegroeid tot een van de bekendste programma’s van de Nederlandse publieke omroep. DESCRIPTION:Chess is a two player strategy board game where the aim is to move different types of playing piece\, each with a prescribed set of possible moves\, around a chequered square board trying to capture the opponents ‘king’ piece. \nToday there are over 2\,000 identifiable variants of the game. One theory is that an early game similar to chess called Chaturanga originated in Northern Indian Subcontinent during the Gupta period (~ 319 – 543 CE) and spread along the Silk Roads west to Persia. Whilst modern Chess is believed to have been derived from Chaturanga means ‘four divisions’ referring either to the divisions of the playing pieces into infantry\, cavalry\, elephantry and chariotry (pieces which in the modern game became the pawn\, knight\, bishop and rook)\, or to the fact that the game was played by four players. Chatrang\, and later Shatranj\, was the name given to the game when it arrived in Sassanid Persia around 600 CE. \nThe earliest reference to the game comes from a Persian manuscript of around 600 CE\, which describes an ambassador from the Indian Subcontinent visiting king Khosrow I (531 – 579 CE) and presenting him with the game as a gift. From there it spread along the Silk to other regions including the Arabian Peninsula and Byzantium. In 900 CE\, Abbasid chess masters al-Suli and al-Lajlaj composed works on the techniques and strategy of the game\, and by 1000 CE Chess was popular across Europe\, and in Russia where it was introduced from the Eurasian Steppe. The Alfonso manuscripts\, also known as the Libro de los Juegos (Book of Games)\, a medieval collection of texts on three different types of popular game from the 13th century CE describe the game of Chess as very similar to Persian Shatranj in rules and gameplay. \nOn 12 December 2019\, the General Assembly proclaimed 20 July as World Chess Day to mark the date of the establishment of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924. Under initiative of FIDE\, July 20 has been observed as International Chess Day by chess players around the world since 1966. The designation of World Chess Day of the UN will not only recognize the important role of the FIDE in supporting international cooperation for chess activity and aiming to improve friendly harmony among all peoples of the world\, but also to provide an important platform to foster\, dialogue\, solidarity and culture of peace. \nThe United Nations recognizes that sports\, the arts and physical activity have the power to change perceptions\, prejudices and behaviours\, as well as to inspire people\, break down racial and political barriers\, combat discrimination and defuse conflict\, and therefore contribute in promoting education\, sustainable development\, peace\, cooperation\, solidarity\, social inclusion and health at the local\, regional and international levels. Chess is one of the most ancient\, intellectual and cultural games\, with a combination of sport\, scientific thinking and elements of art. DESCRIPTION:Op 6 februari 2023 heeft er een zware aardbeving plaatsgevonden in Turkije en Syrië\, ook zijn volgens het United States Geological Survey (USGS) onder anderen landen als Turkije\, Syrië\, Cyprus\, Libanon\, Jordanië\, Armenië\, Georgië en Irak getroffen door de aardbevingen en de naschokken ervan. \nOp beelden is te zien dat er diverse gebouwen zijn ingestort. Er vielen vele doden en slachtoffers\, tienduizenden overleden personen zijn er geteld en dat aantal loopt nog op. De stad Gaziantep is zwaar getroffen. Het epicentrum lag op 17\,9 km diepte in het district Şehitkamil en de beving had een kracht van 7\,8 op de schaal van Richter. Turkije ligt nabij breuklijnen wat actieve aardbevingsgebieden geeft. Negen uur later volgde een nieuwe aardbeving met een kracht van 7\,7 op de schaal van Richter. Deze beving lag wat noordelijker in de provincie Kahramanmaraş. \nHet Rode Kruis heeft in de ochtend na de eerste aardbeving een crisiscentrum opgezet in de hoofdstad Ankara. De hulpverlening in Syrië komt moeilijk tot stand doordat een stuk van het gebied in handen ligt van de regering en het andere gebied in handen van de oppositie. Tegelijkertijd wordt het bereiken van de getroffen gebieden en het bieden van hulp door de hulpverleners bemoeilijkt door de slechte weersomstandigheden. Het Nederlandse Rode Kruis heeft Giro 7244 geopend om geld in te zamelen voor de slachtoffers. Ook Giro555 komt in actie voor slachtoffers aardbeving\, onder meer met de Actiedag Giro555 op 15 februari 2023. In België is rekening 12-12 (BE19 0000 0000 1212) voor dit doel opengesteld. \nOp 20 februari 2023\, twee weken na de zware aardbevingen in het zuiden van Turkije is het Turks-Syrische grensgebied opnieuw getroffen door een aardbeving. Die had een kracht van 6\,4 op de schaal van Richter. SUMMARY:Explosie in de haven van Beiroet
DESCRIPTION:Op 4 augustus 2020 vond er een grote explosie plaats in de haven van Beiroet\, de hoofdstad van Libanon. \nDe explosie veroorzaakte een ramp die minstens 220 doden en ruim 6.500 gewonden eiste en grootschalige schade door de hele stad aanrichtte en wordt beschouwd als de grootste niet-nucleaire explosie van de 21e eeuw. Voorafgaand aan de explosie was er een brand in een opslagplaats. Een eerste explosie vond plaats omstreeks 18:00 uur lokale tijd. Deze kleinere explosie veroorzaakte een grijze rookwolk. De tweede explosie was veel groter en vond plaats rond 18.08 uur. Deze explosie werd veroorzaakt door de ontploffing van ongeveer 2.750 ton opgeslagen ammoniumnitraat. De geologische dienst van de Verenigde Staten rapporteerde de tweede explosie als een aardbeving met een kracht van 3\,3 op de momentmagnitudeschaal. Het TNT-equivalent werd door experts geschat op 1\,1 kiloton. Volgens de universiteit van Sheffield was de tweede explosie even zwaar als een tiende van de atoombom op Hiroshima. \nLinks:\nTientallen doden en meer dan 3000 gewonden na zware explosie in haven Beiroet \nVijf jaar na de explosie in Beiroet zijn de wonden nog altijd tastbaar
